Hmm, no real point of interest here, just a shallow DOF shot of a half eaten plate of food! Color is off and lighting is flat. Food photography needs to increase the viewers appetite and look fresh. What was your intention here?

Hey deadguy, glad to have you join us.
I have no expertise in food photography but there are some issues that I can identify.
Wish you had included the EXIF. DOF is too shallow here. In addition, some sharpening would help with the more focussed food.
A bit too much plate dominating the image, rather than the food.
Background is softly out of focus, simple so that's good.
Color balance looks too warm to me. And there is limited highlight detail, perhaps from the DOF since whites dont appear clipped.
I'm sure others will chime in with their observations, helping you decide what to work on.

Hi, I have dabbled a bit in food photography.

Scott gave some very good points. I would just add, make sure the plate or glass is very clean, no spots. Try not to have the food runny looking....in this case either the sause ran or the food was pushed to the one spot on the plate. Keep it extra neat and tidy looking. I know this isn't easy....but does make for a better photo.

You could also show the whole plate in focus.....maybe try a smaller plate.

Hope this helps.

Appreciate the feedback as I haven't really developed a critical eye towards the product after I push the button if you know what I mean, especially with anything close-up / not landscape / not people. I still "see" what I saw at the time.

Question for the sake of learning: how can the color be improved and in what manner?

The image has primarily a color temperature issue. Assuming Adobe, one way to ensure correct correction in post processing is to shoot in raw and twiddle the temperature slider in ACR. Without opening the image with ACR, one way to correct in PP is to use Photoshop and add a curves adjustment layer. From the curves panel pick the white eyedropper and try different white points in the image to come close. Then chose the individual color channels in the curve panel and twiddle the red, green and blue curves until the color are correct. Alternatively, try a color balance adjustment layer and play with the color sliders for shadows, mid tones and highlight.

Here's an example with the curves layer method and an exposure twiddling layer:
