The last 4 really do it for me. I think the grain in the last 3 adds something to the photos, seems to go towards making the subjects seem less real/visible, mirroring their situation in life. 1, 3 and 4 are also good, but 2 doesn't do it for me, sorry. Lovely captures.
I enjoyed your series, Paul; I love the chance to see people's street photos. I especially liked 1 and 2, and the images of the homeless are pretty poignant.
Thanks big bird, I really liked four a lot so I am glad you picked it.
The lens is as Phil presumed, the Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8. I am very happy with it but it's not a great solo portrait length (55mm is too short) but it does great work for other things.
Paul.K: I like the b&w processing in Nos. 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6. It has a modern yet somehow a traditional look to the tonality. Your process controls the highlights well. Could you please share info about your conversion process and software?
I shoot RAW and convert in Camera Raw. I convert to grayscale and adjust the color mixer to get the right look. I boost contrast and clarity A LOT and then adjust the brightness or exposure sliders with an eye on the histogram.
