p.8 #2 · Pentax 645D Released!

Its logical the price would go up, many 645 lenses were $200 or less.
The best ones rarely top $500 in open auction.
So it seems many people want to buy a 645D 44mmx33mm Sensor Dslr for just $9,400.
The local shop had many 645 lenses from $150 to $600 and yesterday
When I stopped by they were all gone.

Poof !

Just like that.

Over the last two years I've considered buying a few 645 lenses to adapt to my old 5D.

If you look at local shops,
maybe you'll realize they have some 645 and 6x7 glass priced
at what it was for last few years:

Cheap

645 & 6x7 glass has always been easily adapted to Eos 36mmx24mm Sensor,
using Pentax own medium format to K-Mount lens adapter stacked on a simple PK to Eos adapter:

Depends on how wide you like. Also there is a crop factor. Somewhere I read it was about 1.3, so a 45mm lens would become about 58mm. I often use 16mm end of my 16~35mm on full frame 35mm, which probably will not be achievable on the 645D. I may look for a 35mm lens for the 645 though.

Here's a common marketprice example of 35mm autofocus 645 lens selling at ebay recently:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220566573073

Pentax Japan said recently they want to make a wider lens for 645D.
My experience with owning Pentax since 2002 is it can take 2 or 3 years to materialize.
Or never happen.
Same interview mentions next 645D version may use CMOS instead of CCD sensor.
I'll guess Pentax sees the issues with chromatic aberations using existing 645 glass on CCD sensor.

Thesedays there are no third party options for 645 glass.

I've read 645D has a crop factor of 1.3x and I've also read instead its 1.7x crop factor.
You do the math and decide for yourself what the crop factor is:

645 glass designed for 56mm x 41.5mm
645D 1st version sensor is 44mm x 33mm

The Pentax interview over on LL actually shows a mockup of a wide angle lens, so it may come sooner than we think.

It is definitely around 1.27 - 1.3 depending on if you are looking at the horizontal or vertical figure.

My guess is that by Photokina this fall, Pentax will have had time to gauge demand for the 645D and at that time announce the wide angle and U.S. availability.

The Pentax 645 A series did indeed feature a 600mm f/5.6

HerbChong wrote:
the 600/5.6 is a smaller lens and i don't remember it being available in 645, only in 35mm.

Wow molson. Did you ever have the lens looked at by a technician or your body? I suspect you might have had a misaligned copy. My copy does not even begin to approach the poor performance yours did. I shoot mine on a Pentax 645N film body. Incidentally, my primary 645N body was a salvage that was sent to Pentax for a complete overhaul and one of the items on the repair bill referred to bringing the body back into alignment.

molson wrote:
I would take that with a large grain of salt... the FA 35 I owned had easily the worst corner performance of any lens, in any format, that I've ever seen. I guess it might be okay on a 24x36mm sensor, where you don't see most of the frame...

Simon,

A series are manual focus

FA series will allow autofocusing on bodies that can autofocus and can also be manually focused on all bodies

Keep an eye out for:

Pentax FA 35mm
Pentax FA 33-55mm
Pentax FA 45-85mm

Pentax A 55mm - very sharp lens

Pentax A 35mm - quite nice

I have all five of these and the manual focus A 35mm is actually a very nice lens. I am hoping to find some time to directly compare the three superwides: A 35mm, FA 35mm and FA 33-55mm. I shoot these on the Pentax 645N film body and with adapters on Canon and Pentax DSLRs.

What's the rush? It sounds like Pentax (Hoya, whomever) seemingly want to do this right.

It's a considerable thing to launch a new product and given the wreckage that has littered the "high-end" digital imaging sector in the past years, I applaud the measured stance.

(While simultaneously pooh-poohing the previous habit of trotting out the "prototype" as often as they did - but hey, water under the bridge, the 645D is finally here. Do I get any special recognition for an insanely long parenthetical as this one?)

As to FA 645 glass, KEH kind of emptied out in the past 3 days.

And they say that the 645D won't be sold in the USA. I guess there are at least a few that disagree, or are certain that they will find their way to these shores.

Really? I thought that it would just be available in Japan sooner than in America.

Pentax has not indicated one way or the other about availability outside Japan. Current indications are that if it is successful in Japan, they'll test the waters elsewhere, probably in the US initially.

Pentax France says they're considering whether it makes sense to create a support network for 645D. Pentax USA said same thing.

It seems to me the regional Pentax organizations get to decide whether they want to put up their budget money into supporting a 645D.

I'll guess 645D will be a Japan market only item throughout 2010.

Hoya has made Pentax Divisions be profitable on all levels, so no one country or countries will be bankrolled by Hoya in a global 645D product roll out.

Pentax Japan says everyone will carry 645D whereas all the regionals are "studying it"

Pentax is a different company now, under Hoya ownership. Past Pentax logo business models do not predict future.

645D will be for sale in Japan with its one newly designed for digital lens along with existing & unsold 645 and 6x7 glass inventories remaining in Japan from the film era. Pentax 645 and 6x7 Leaded glass designs are banned for sale new in European Union countries. 645D in Europe will only have one kit lens available for sale as no older new old stock 645 & 6x7 lenses can be sold there.

Pentax Japan is already talking about in interview at Luminous Landscape about offering the next 645D with CMOS sensor instead of CCD sensor.

So make that two 645D purchases for someone who wants the best 645D available, one CCD & next one is CMOS.

Really informative interview, enjoy:

all of Pentax has done well except the camera division. it has been losing market share in both compact camera and DSLR. in compacts, they are losing unit volume. in DSLR they have not increased unit volume YoY while the rest of the competition has. things are rebounding as at all other companies but by how much?

Here's an article on 645D and it says the same old thing:

645D is a Japan market only item.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-30685_3-20001382-264.html

Not that will stop anyone from buying a 645D as grey market item.

645D is pre~order now in Japan for $10,347 plus $1,242 for its one & only newly designed for digital sensor lens:

From the link:

"Single item shipping cost, worldwide express: US$ 25"

Wow, what a bargain. Now, all I have to come up with is the 10K!
