p.1 #1 · My Actions have gone! Help!

I'm using CS (1) on PC, and after shutting it down yesterday through the Task Manager beacuse it hung, I have now lost all my own actions! The presets are there and third party ones I installed but mine are gone! I know I know - should have backed them up, but has anyone got any ideas for recovery?

I have tried doing a system restore - no joy.

and also read aboout finding the actions palette.psp in the Applications Data folder, I have got to this but it looks like a shortcut file and once I get there i'm not sure what to do with it! I can't click on it as it's just a shortcut and doesn't take me anywhere.

I'm pretty sure there is no hope but thought i'd try you lot for help!

Nicola

ps - as a belated add-on if I now DO back-up my actions, what do I copy? where is the file? is it this actions palette.psp?

I'm sorry to have to tell you this. If you did not use the actions palette's fly-out menu item save actions to save your action set you actions are indeed gone. When you record actions they are save into Photoshop's preferences if these preferences are reset to Photoshop's defaults your actions are gone.

However if you have a current backup of your system before your problem you may be able to recover some or all of your actions. Adobe saves each release of photoshop preferences is a location for that release for each user. I'm running windows xp. Microsoft changes where vista and win 7 save user settings. The file on my system that you would need to recover is: "C:\Documents and Settings\Your User ID\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Adobe Photoshop CS3 Settings\Actions Palette.psp" search for "Actions Palette.psp" in your backup.

If you recover your actions please save them you can save your actions sets anywhere you want I save mine in "My Photoshop Actions"....
