p.1 #1 · Replacing Quick Release on Bogen/Manfrotto 488 Ball head
I have a Bogen 488 that came with the RC4 quick release
and would like to replace it with an RC 2 quick release
But after taking a closer look it doesn't look like the model that shipped with the RC4 attached has the standard round top with a stud for attaching another quick release. It looks like it has a screw that holds the quick release directly to the "shaft" that sticks up out of the ball (A in the photo below). It also has what looks like a set screw (B).
Here is a pic of the QR of the RC2 for comparison
The RC2 doesn't have a recess so the screw will mount flush.
For giggles I attempted to remove the RC4 plate but after removing the set screw and turning with an Allen wrench, I could only manage to unfasten the whole assembly from the ball stick and all.
At this point I just put the RC4 back on and hoped someone might have an idea on how to remove the RC4 and stick on the RC2, preferable without machining involved....
My first thought was a replacement "stick" but I haven't been able to locate find one of those

Well some further digging has turned up exploded views and part numbers! RC2 and RC4
I'll check with my local camera shop tomorrow to see if they can order it the "ball and stick" part from the RC2 model. Looks like everything below and beside is the same so it should be a straight swap.

Robert,
It sounds like you figured it out -- for what its worth I replaced the RC4 QR on my 488 with a RRS plate and man is it so much nicer than the Bogen stuff. I know, its more $$ but a lot cheaper than a new ballhead. So some day if you want to upgrade you can just swap out your RC2 -- its well worth it.

Put an RRS clamp on it. I have I have RC2 clamps and plates sitting in a box. The RC2 clamp and plate was the most annoying thing about my Manfrotto system. It might be OK with very light camera equipment but with anything with weight, the clamp wont stay tight on the plate and the camera plates wont stay tight on the camera.
