Anyone know a good online source for 20 x 28" pre-cut archival/rag mats and backing boards? This would be for 16 x 24" prints. Most places offer pre-cut mats for 16 x 20" and not 16 x 24" prints.
When ordering the mat you have to play with the border sizes for the cuts but you should be able to do it. If you have questions they answer their emails faily quickly and I have been very happy with doing buisness with them. I have even specified specific odd cuts when odering in their remarks section and have gotten what i've asked for. Good company to deal with. Yes they do have archival mats and boards. prices are nice imo also.
Thanks guys. I am aware that you can order practically any size you want but custom cuts are usually more expensive than pre-cuts. I will check out American Frame - thanks! Also, I like my borders to be even on all 4 sides i.e. either 2" or 3" all around. A 3" or 4" border is nice but it makes the framing more expensive.
+1 for American Frame. Great service and decent prices, and the mat quality has been excellent for me. They do occasionally run out of stuff, but they tell you right away so you can either plan on the delay or make another choice.
If you order the frame and backing board, a mat from the low-end Crescent collection is free.
Documounts had the best pricing I've seen on bulk precut mats and foam core if you're bagging the print+backer. If doing framing too, I was very happy with the stuff I've gotten from frame destination. Their mat prices were a little higher, but only by a few percent, but its convenient to have it all come together and the packing materials are very good.
There are gadgets out there which allow you to cut your own...ranging from the cheap to silly money. But buying something sensible could be a long term investment...they never go wrong.
I had quite a simple device which was little more than a sliding guide which held a blade at a fixed angle. Worked pretty well as I remember (I loaned it to some art students years back and never saw it again!).
Try redimat.com If they don't have the exact size you want they will charge you a one time charge of $8.00 for setting up the template and then order a bunch at a time.
