I'll bet the 85 is as good as the 50 and that is superb. The 8-16 also looks amazing much better than the 10-20 which is a good lens, let's hope the real world results hold up.
Ok, I hadn't realized they'd changed the designation of EX lenses to be constant aperture, although that's a strange way to change.

Nope - 10-20 4-5.6 is still an EX, as is the 18-50 2.8 and it looks like the new 17-50 IS getting the EX designation according to DPreview.
(p.s. will be very interested to see how these perform - nice to have Sigma keep the pressure on...have to agree that a 24-70 OS would have been nice though)
The 10-20 f/4-5.6 is at least 4 years old and they changed the naming about 1 year ago.
If you compare the new 50-500 (Pic on DPreview: http://is.gd/8RfMG) to the old one (Picture from Sigma germany homepage: http://is.gd/8Rg1R) the new one seem at least as well build.
I have the Sigma 50, and love it, but Sigma's 85 and 70-200 face very tough competition in the Canon 85 1.8 and 70-200 f4 IS. My guess is the Canon 85 will likely be at least $100 less expensive, have similar IQ, and focus more accurately than the Sigma. The 70-200 f4IS may end up being a bit more expensive, and I'm willing to be suspend disbelief and assume the Sigma's IQ will be comparable, but again, I just can't believe the Sigma will focus as accurately.
That said, I'll probably buy the 85. And check out the 17-50 OS as well.
people looking for aperture will gladly pay $100 to go from f1.8 to f1.4, especially in a portrait lens. Bokeh from the Canon isn't all that great, so if Sigma can make it similar to their 50 it could make a big difference to people who are actually sensitive to bokeh differences (most just care about DOF).
For the record, I think the Sigma 50 turns out lovely images...

Yes, but don't forget the Sigma versions of the 85 and 70-200 are faster. With the 70-200, it's comparative Canon lens would be the new 70-200 2.8 IS which will be priced at over $2000.

My sentiments exactly. I have to say though that I don't think I will buy the Sigma unless I can try it first to be sure focus is right. I had a lot of problems with my Sigma 50 in that regard (3 trips back and forth to Sigma for calibration). Mine is consistent now, but still front focuses at close distances wide open.

So many OS lenses and no 150/2.8 OS. Oh well, I guess I'll have to make do with the 100/2.8 IS. Sigh....
Happy shooting,
Yakim.
Yakim, the 150 is already superb IQ, I'm guessing it's not a priority. To me the fact they are now offering alternative superfast primes is great news. I've been agonizing over an 85mm for months and it looks like Sigma has come to the rescue. The next lenses I would love to see are a FF 16-40 f/2.8, 35 f/1.4(1.2!), 105 f/1.8, 400 f/5.6 OS, 500 f/4.5 OS.
Why not just say it's up against the Zeiss as well? For the price it might as well be. Then again there is that darned autofocus feature that keeps rearing its head.
Quite honestly folks, this lens will be in a class of its own with regards to the Canon mount. It'll have better bokeh (and probably better IQ) than the 85/1.8, and it'll probably be 1/2 the price of the Canon F1.2L. Smart move, IMO.

I prefer my S50 bokeh to my 85/1.8 bokeh... so if the recent Sigma fast primes are anything to go by, then yes - return that 1.8, wait and see. The 85L is great, but the focus speed (and price!) leaves a lot to be desired.
I replaced my Canon 85 1.8 with a Canon 100 f/2 so I can't directly compare the bokeh of the Canon 85 1.8 with the Sigma 50 1.4, but I have no issue with the bokeh of the 100 f/2 (which is remarkedly similar to the 135L).
Also, the extra speed of f/1.4 vs f/1.8 is something that I would rarely use.
Additionally, as much as I love my Sigma 50 1.4 it did requre a month long trip to Sigma (actually CRIS) to get the focus right.
Thus, unless the Sigma 85 is stellar and well priced, I doubt it will see its way into my bag.
On the other hand, a decent third party FF 35 1.4 or 1.8, now that is something that I would strongly consider, as I consider the 35L to be overrated and overpriced (yes,I'm prepared to be sacked), whereas the 35 f/2 has its own issues.
So a fast FF 35mm lens with AF (I'm aware of the Samyang) would be a lens that I bet many, including myseld, would strongly consider. 85mm? I'd be just as happy with the 85 1.8 or 100 f/2.
Got to admit that I'd be tempted to trade my Siggy 18-50mm F2.8 for the new 17-50 if the price isn't too much. I'd love 8mm too but I doubt I'll bother replacing the 10-20mm.
i think it will hve to be less than 1/2 the price of the 85L.

IMO, Sigma overpriced their new 24-70 f/2.8. For what they are charging for that lens, I'd rather just pick up a used Canon 24-70 or really same some money and get a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. If only Sigma had put OS in their new 24-70 then the price might be more acceptable.

You're assuming it won't be plagued with issues like the 50/1.4 EX is. AF is something the Sigma will never be able to do better than the 85/1.8--HSM is known for being both slower and less accurate than USM. As for IQ, that is something yet to be seen. I sure hope Sigma gets it right with this one, because the 50/1.4 was a huge 'fail' in my experience, which is sad really since the lens did have some good qualities.

For me, there is a huge difference between a 24mm and a 28mm. IQ is not everything...if you need the wide angle, then 28mm just won't do.

But then again, there is a huge number of very satisfied photographers ( me included ) with the 50 1.4. From my perspective, a huge improvement over the Canon version and 1/3 the cost of the 1.2.
My focus was a little off, sent to Sigma for a tuneup, spot on now. Worth the effort IMHO for this marvelous lens. If the 85 is anything close to the 50 1.4, my 1.8 will be on the selling blocks.
