p.2 #1 · Fake Ring...?

Diamonds can scratch. Its not like they are invincible. Diamonds themselves don't really weight that much and the majority of the e-rings weight is going to be from the metal of the setting. Gold is certainly much lighter than platinum, and looking at that setting, it looks like a rather inexpensive white gold 6 prong solitaire. I got a cheap 4 prong, white gold setting for my fiance when I first proposed and we went out later to replace the setting with something she wanted. We went with a platinum semi-halo design. The weight between the two rings was night and day. The platinum band felt like a boat anchor relative to the gold band.

If the ring felt light it was probably because the band was white gold. If the rock looked small, it is probably a steep/deep cut.

It is nearly impossible to scratch a diamond, and certainly not realistic to do so with any substance your average person comes into contact with. You'll usually need another diamond to do so.

Furthermore, the difference in density between Au and Pt is ~10%. A far cry from "night and day"; and, certainly not noticeable - or even detectable - with the kinds masses we're talking about.

OP, the 'scratch' is most likely a needle inclusion, or maybe residue left from the diamond scratching another substance.

If the ring felt light it was probably because the band was white gold. If the rock looked small, it is probably a steep/deep cut. The diamond doesn't sparkle as much because of this cut and these diamonds are typically significantly discounted due to their poor cut/performance. The steep/deep combination can make for a diamond that physically looks smaller from the top (because it is) and is physically "taller" than a perfectly cut diamond. It may be 2 carets, but it might look like a 1.5 due to its cut/light performance.

Huh, I guess I did learn a thing or two from hanging out on pricescope...

Edit: Do you have any tighter crops of the diamond? It looks cloudy. It could just be dirty as hell though.

"Gold is certainly much lighter than platinum" ?? On which planet is that?

On the planet earth. Platinum jewelry is significantly heavier than gold because it's purer. An identically sized platinum band will weigh about 60% more than the comparable 14K gold. Platinum peices are generally 85-95% pure platinum where 14K (58%) and 18K (75%) gold contain much more alloy.

Also, diamonds generally don't "scratch". They will flake or chip.

The diamonds on the most recent ring shots I did were terrible. Many imperfections. I figured they got much bigger diamonds because the stones were poor quality, and who but the tog with the macro lenses is going to see? As long as it brings them pleasure it's all good.

The weight is from the metal and not the stone. White metal in a real ring could be 14K white gold, 18K white gold, Platinum or the new option for pure white metal that never will get a yellow cast ( white gold is yellow gold with alloy to turn white) is Palladium. This member of the platinum family is about 1/4 the price of gold at todays spot price and is getting popular. It is about 2/3 the weight of gold so it feels very light weight. Of course silver would also be light but no one ever mounts a real stone in silver as it would not hold. It could be a CZ but on a scale CZ weighs more than natural diamond of the same measurement. Not enough to feel holding it but it is heavier. Hard to say with this photo but the scratch appears to be an inclusion which would make it real and most likely a palladium mounting. Also it appears to have some other inclusions which also would make it a real stone. Real diamonds also come with surface defects such as faint scratches. If small they leave them to keep the weight in average cut grades. The finer polish grades would have all surface imperfections removed.

My engagement ring is Pearl. Not Diamond. I love pearls 10x more than diamonds. My husband likes that too.

Thats a fake ring, its at the whitest with no intrusions.

No retail diamond ring is flawless with that amount of clarity, and if you say the weight was low, could be so. Doesnt mean its bad, its just probably a $300 2-carat solitaire vs a $8k one lol.

If it is a fake diamond it would most likely be Cubic Zirconia which is heavier than diamond and still very hard to scratch while being pretty much flawless. My wedding ring is made of titanium which I wanted due to its lightness and strength not to mention being much cheaper than silver (I personally do not like gold jewelry).

Is it possible that the ring in question was also titanium?

With the feathers and inclusions it looks to me like about an i2-i3 clarity. If you get a low enough quality stone a 2 carat isn't that outrageous. One of the obvious giveaways about a large fake diamond is they don't have any flaws, if someone had a 2 carat flawless diamond they'd probably be EXTREMELY wealthy. Cant' tell for sure without louping it, but my guess is a very included 2 ct. in a light setting.

I do this for a living, but like I said, I can't tell from the photos for sure.
