I’ve never strobed before but I thought I’d give it a go after seeing all the nice shots by Matthew and Bob, etc… on this forum.
I have shot ambient many times in this gym and was never satisfied with the results: ISO 3200, 2.8, 1/400, resulting in the usual boring looking photos. For lights I used an Elinchrom Quadra “A” head and a couple of Canon speedlights (580ex and 430ex) triggered with a skyport receiver. With this setup I was able to light most of the floor, although there were a few hotspots, something I’ll look into on my next shoot. Bouncing was out of the question because of a wooden ceiling and brick walls. So I tried to “feather the flash,” but I feel the flash was still too direct.
This strobing business is all new to me and I’ve got a lot to learn. I really liked the light from the Quadra. I didn’t have to adjust the white balance in post, something I did shooting ambient.
Thanks for looking and I welcome any comments and constructive criticism.
Gary,
I think this is a great first try! With a little more adjusting between light set-up and camera settings you will be right there. You have nice "pop" of the colors and WB looks good also. I wpuld drop the ISO and the F-stop as I do see a little excessive . noise in the faces. Try maybe 500 ISO and F4 or F3.5 Again.. very nice go at it for the first time.
Bob,
I realized when I got home I should have lowered the the ISO to 400-500, the f-stop too. The quadras do produce enough light. But I didn’t want underexpose the photos either and I do not trust camera histograms for proper exposer.
Part of the noise is a result of cropping on my 1D Mark II (as usual my Mark III is in for repair). It was one of those frustrating games where most of the action was slightly out of reach for my lights.
I've never played or seen indoor soccer played on hardwood... Its always been a type of turf...once it was slightly better than green carpet, but never hardwood
Indoor soccer or “futsal” is very popular in Europe. It’s all played on hardwood floors. The ball is a little smaller, slightly heavier, and doesn’t bounce like a normal soccer ball, and it hurts like hell when you get nailed by one. Believe me, I’ve been hit a few times trying to get a shot.
