p.2 #1 · G1 & Canon FD opinion needed

My zoom is a Tokina ATX 80-200 f2.8 , has been good to me, and is sharp and fast. It should be interesting to try.
I think I will buy an adapter to micro 4/3, bring a few lenses to a local store, and just try them. About a year ago I had my heart set on a Canon 40D, and I brought all my lenses and a Canon F1 (old style) to a newly opened "Henry's" store (Canada's biggest retail photo chain) for appraisal on trade in. They offered me $600 CDN for everything I had. I couldn't believe it. I am fanatical about the care of my equipment, and knew the real value.
I've pretty well convinced myself that micro 4/3 is for me, whether or not I can use any of the old FD glass.

I'm interested to know the change in technique that made the difference in making the old glass usable. And did you keep the 20-35L? That lens has to be my favourite of all, a beautiful piece of glass.

Computer optimization of high element-count designs made wider zooms better. There's very few wide-angle zooms that don't suck made prior to the mid-1990's. The telezooms are another story, with some of the best performers on the market having been introduced in the mid-70's through the late 80's. Normal-range zooms became good performers in the 80's (especially those with modest 35mm wide-ends) but have improved a lot over the years.

The major issues with all these old lenses is, of course, the 2X crop factor. I'm using an FD TS 35mm, and I sure wish it had a 35mm-like field of view rather than 70mm. Alas.

That is my biggest question. As good as some of these lenses FD were to me, how useful are they going to be when they are not the same lenses at all.

They will be, for the most part short teles. The FD line has had only two stellar lenses wider than 28mm: 14 2.8L and 24 1.4L and they both seem to go for quite a lot more than I would have expected by now...

In some cases that is the benefit. Given the lack of fast telephoto lenses for the m4/3, being able to take a fast 50mm, 90-100mm or 135mm makes a compact fast telephoto. My Canon FD135mm f/2.8 is now the equivalent of a 270mm f/2.8, and it is positively tiny versus a full frame 300mm f/2.8. Cool.

I agree that if you want wide angle, adapting lenses is not going to do one much good. The Panasonic 7-14 is quite good. For more normal range, the 20mm Panasonic is very good.
