In addition to what has been said also often rain covers come with different eyecups.
I've never had an eyepiece come off, or lost one. Been shooting Canon for several years and had many new and used cameras. Heck most times I have trouble getting it off the camera when I want to wipe down the view finder.
I shot EOS since 1990 and have never had problems with the rubber eye frame thingie coming off. I tried to remove mine and it was so tight I thought it was going to break. However I make sure my camera fits a bit loose in the bag for easy extraction. Not so the eye frame doesn't rub the back of the bag, but so I get a sure grip on the camera and thus have less chance of dropping it on a fast draw.
Another common complaint is photog beer guts pressing the rear buttons. I've not had that problem either. I suppose a daily workout might help that problem.
FWIW, everytime I saw my eyecup fall off it had caught on the the top of my jeans or belt when I let the camera hang from the strap. I like my camera bodies to hang low on the strap. I never lost an eyecup while using a hand strap. For all day treks I like a neck strap though... so good bye eyecups... really, you don't need them much anyway...

I like 'em because I (currently) wear glasses, and the soft rubber is not as likely to scratch my Ray-Ban's. Hope to fix that with laser beams in the next year, so maybe then I can try my cam nekkidd!
