Using CS3. I’m trying to put a bunch of dimensions on a photo. I made a layer called “Dimensions”, but every time I choose the text tool to place another dimension on the photo, PS creates another layer. None of my dimensions are going on the dimension layer, and I have a dozen different text layers. Is there a way to create a layer, and use the text tool numerous times and keep them all on the same layer?

Other than rasterizing and merging down as you work, no.
Text exists in a limbo; to be editable, it can't be pixel image data, so it's not pixel image data (and as a result can't be thrown onto a layer with other random pixels).
You may want to try using layer folders and seeing if that at least makes your stack more manageable. By putting all the dimension text layers in a folder, you wouldn't have to deal with them except when you need to.
If you don't need to edit or move the text, rasterizing and merging down would also work, and allow you to keep everything on a single "dimensions" layer.
Nope, but you can put all your text layers in a group (layer folder as colin mentions), and control the position, opacity, and blend mode of the group as a whole.
Layer Groups. Never heard of them, but I tried them, and that really, and I do mean Really cleaned up the layers. Made a group for text, a group for arrows, and a group for lines. Makes it much more manageable. Thank you.
