Frustrated RQ owners...

I found a perfect off-the-(grocery)shelf product for protecting the flashtube of an RQ head.

I also came up with a PDF cutting template for the notches--works great!

It's located on my first attempt at a blog: http://beileyphoto.com

Hopefully it's just what you were looking for.

Cool!
But I'm on a diet
Wait I'll make cupcakes for everyone else and I'll look like I lost weight.
Yeah that's the ticket.
But seriously, great find and tutorial.
It makes you wonder what's the problem with Elinchrom.

Nice solution. I made a improvised cover with two CD's glued together with velcro straps in between. I works but yours is nicer and has an added feature.

Next month there is a fairly large annual photo trade show here in the Netherlands, the main Elinchrom distributor will attend. I will ask again, no high hopes.
Has anyone asked the US distributor about this?
We could set up a petition: Angry Quadra owners demand a proper head cover. Serious, I'm willing to co-ordinate.

Elinchrom is developing a cover for the Quadra heads. I seen the prototype at my local Elinchrom dealer in Belgium. Basically it’s a flat hard plastic disk with clips on the side that snaps on the end of the Quadra head that can be used as a diffuser. The problem was it was tough to get off. My deal said that Elinchrom should have them on the market later in the year…………..or next

They should have them later in the year, or next? How hard is it to make a little disc protector? I think Elinchrom really dropped the ball on that one, it seems pretty obvious that it should have some sort of protection.

I had a plastic lid from Ikea laying around the apartment that fitted perfectly

hoppy,

I like that one.

Any idea what Ikea item that lid belonged to?

How old do you think the lid was?

I wonder if it is still in stock--I have an Ikea store nearby.

There was a message in a German Photo forum some days ago that Elinchrom will deliver a head cover for the Quadra this February or March.

From what I have read, it's something like socaldan has made for himself: a combined head cover, small diffusion box including a filter holder. Product code is E25100 here in Switzerland.

I think the code must be EL25100.
I did a search on Google and found a thread where longer cables are mentioned as well as the new protective cap.

To the OP. That is very clever. Not a lot of work for the benefit it will give. Will definitely try this.

Thanks tarheelblue.

It really goes fast with the pdf template.

Being new to this type of gear/shooting I'd really like to see how the talent here uses the deeper cover in a diffused bare bulb fashion.

... especially in the RQ's 66/33 asymmetric mode with the limited stock cable lengths.

The diffuser appears to be in stock at a store in scandinavia. Or it could be a pre-order. Either way, it has an actual product photo.

Dan,
Thanks for a great contribution. I don't have lights now, looking around and the Quadra is on my list. Also, you have some really nice work on your blog site.

Price equates to about 14 euro's or 19,50 US dollars.
The site states that there is no known delivery date.
Amazing it had to take this long to fabricate a small piece of plastic.

Just talked to someone at Bogen. They confirmed the product shown in the Scandinavian web site is real, and is being brought to the US "soon".

If these things really are combination diffuser/gel holders then they are potential game-changers when used with the PCB PLM. That'll help cut down on bulk needed to shoot while increasing utility.

Is this a 'different' ring flash? The pictures and specs are the same as the Ranger RX 1500 ringflash. Confused...

It's probably the same but with a Quadra cable, so no need for the adapter.

well, got the quadra today, and picked up the new protector cap as well. It's 12,50 euro's. Seems to work quite nicely as a diffusor as well. Not sure yet how to squeeze in filters, but I guess I'll just cut some lee filters and fit 'em in between the cap and the reflector.

Any idea what the ringflash will cost in the US?

Found my own answer... I guess ~$1300 ouch!

Using the tiny RQ head to work like a Rayflash/Orbis sounds like a worthy DIY project.
