I just met with a MOB and a Bride two weeks ago, who decided to book us for an upcoming date. It's clear that the MOB is heading up all the details and paying for the wedding. But the contract was signed "MOB for Bride" (substitute their names). Is it ok for the MOB to sign the contract or must it be the bride? I am trying to figure this out before I deposit the retainer. This is the first time I've encountered this. On the client lines, she wrote in the bride and groom's names and address, but then signed her name along with "for the bride." The bride does have a medical condition, but I'm not sure if that would prevent her from signing. Also, she's a trustworthy person who works with one of my friends, so she's not trying to pull anything on us.
Technically MOB is the client and the Bride/Groom information should have the names of the B&G. Whoever is paying should sign it. Whose name is on the check?
MOB signed the check, so the contract matches the check. I was thinking along the lines of PwrRENJ - I would be more concerned if the contract didn't match the check. I realize MOB is doing this because the Bride does not want to be in charge of this. We met with both - they have an excellent relationship, so MOB isn't trying to take over or run the show.

haha - yep. I'm sitting here learning about pumps. Yee-hah! But I thought I'd take a brief study break ;-)
Thats funny, in my day job I just took a tour of my customer's pump mfg facility, twin screw, centrifugal and j-pump are all now part of my vocabulary. Of course you're learning to design them, I just know how to ship them.
I would say whoever paid should sign it as if you get into trouble most likely this will be the person who will be trying to get their money back. Make sure the contract reads her name throughout though not just in the signatures... That should probably match...
In my contract the bride and groom each have spots to sign (I usually get both signatures, but a few times just one of them was there) and then an additional spot for if someone else is helping pay.
To me it is important that I am contracting with the bride and/or groom, because it is "their day".

Goodluck on that. What I wrote is FACT.
You are there for the BRIDE and GROOM not the MOB. If she signs, shes the boss, I don't and will not work for a MOB.
Also, anyone can send payment in toward a couples wedding package, you going to have them sign to cause they paid?
For anyone who believes MOB name on the contract is ok consider this; What about MOG, FOB, FOG, etc....... Are you ready to not answer to them if they disagree with whomever other than the B&G? What if the MOB and groom don't get along and the MOB request you to send the finished products to her? How are you going to respond to the groom?
You go to the car dealership to purchase/lease a vehicle. Your daddy writes a check for the down payment or full payment if you got like that. Who's name is on the vehicle if he was just giving you money for the vehicle? You're 25 years old and you can't drive your car that your daddy helped you pay for Oh wait, it aint your car....it aint your wedding either.
The B&G should be your only client for a wedding. If someone wants to pay on their behalf that's cool and all, but don't let them sign the contract under any circumstance.
Let's say ten of the bride and groom's friends decided it would be a nice gift it they all chipped in and paid for the photographer. Who would you want to answer to, ten friends or the bride and groom?
