I wonder it work well with the IS or not...
as at the old time...I have been told that switch off IS will get a better image when using TC 1.4x...
and I find it is true on my 70-300 IS(though I dont use it so much and maybe wrong...)
I wonder is it same with the new version IS

Has anyone tried to use the TC 1.4x with this lens? Is there enough clearance between the lens back element and the TC 1.4 so they don't get into contact? Thanks.

No problem, Paul. FWIW, while I do not own the 100L, I use a Tamron 1.4x all the time with my sigma 150 which yields excellent results. Having said that I think it's a fair assumption that the 100L would do the same, although IS may become less effective given the additional FL.

Thanks again Vers. Will give the Tamron TC a try.

Just tried with the Kenko 1.4x, indoors under normal room lighting.

No good at all with either the 7D or 5D MkII.

Really bad hunting. So bad I thought something would break!

It made no difference whether IS was on or off.

Hunting will happen when AFing, but since this was posted in the macro forum I figured the OP was using this lens for shooting actual macro, which should be done using MF.

Thanks to everyone for providing info. My plan is to use the TC only for macro photography.

True, I usually MF for macro, however I've become used to the general utility of this lens I forgot which forum I was on ...and automatically tried AF.

I was really surprised at the behaviour with the TC (which performs perfectly with other lenses under the same circumstances). "Hunting" is actually an understatement. It was continually driving back 'n forth (at just a bit faster then 1Hz) ... even when the image was in focus.

I'm assuming you were using Ai servo? If you haven't yet try one shot to see if the issue persists. FWIW macro lenses aren't known for their AF speed to begin with, surely adding another element which affects AF directly isn't going to give you the best results.

Back again (Saturday morning chores & breakfast!).

I didn't expect the best results, only trying the combo out of curiosity and in response to this thread. However I thought the AF behaiviour was a worthwhile observation.

Yup ... it was in AI servo ... but I just tried one shot and it's still the same.

Hi. I have tried the lens with a 1.4 TC with the same results. It will not autofocus and hunts continually. (7D and 40D tried). It is OK with manual focus and I haven't checked out how good the IS is with this combination.

Umm not sure why you're using AF. But nevertheless...if Canon doesn't list it as compatible, then I doubt it'll work. I'd turn off IS completely, set the focus limitor to the least range of focus, and then try.

Good luck.

I just did a search on this and found this thread. The 100L Macro with a 1.4x TC in one shot or servo AF causes an extreme focus jitter that is alarming. I was glad to see it was not only my lens.

Others have stated that for macro, most people MF anyway. While this is true, using the new 7D Macro AI Servo can be useful, but with an extender, you will not be use this feature due to the focus jitter issue described in this thread. This is probably not a big deal for most users, but mildly disappointing for some.

FWIW, Nikon says that their 105mm micro VR will not auto focus with their new TC either. . . .

I use the Canon 100 macro all the time with the 1.4x TC. They won't connect directly, so I put a extension tube in between them. I use manual focus, so don't have any concerns about AF hunting. The results seem good to me. Also, I use the TC with the 300mm and it works great, so I think the 1.4x TC is worth owning.
