I haven't seen any mention of anyone having done that here. Just the suggestion of the idea.

If the mirror hangs on or strikes the lens when going up, a portion of the bottom of the image will be darkened (because the mirror was in the way while the shutter opened). If you don't get this, then the mirror probably only hangs when going down.

I don't know what exactly happens when the mirror is being raised and why it often only hangs when going down. Maybe the mechanism is more complicated than a simple hinge around which it rotates.

One thing to consider is that you may be focusing past infinity due to the thickness of the adapter. It is possible on at least some Contax lenses to adjust where the barrel stops rotating for infinity. If it goes too far, you may hit the mirror, but if you don't go far enough, while you may clear the mirror, you won't reach infinity. So I had one case where I adjusted the infinity exactly, and this happened to be just enough to clear the mirror. You'd have to do a search to see how it would be done for this particular lens, and I'm not sure if such a discussion exists. It was not difficult for the Contax 28/2.8 .

When you hit the mirror, the short term effect that I either noticed or imagined was that the microadjust calibration was thrown off for my lenses just a hair, and only temporarily (maybe a day or two?). I also think that the reason the mirror hangs one way and not the other is that going up is powered by a quick motor, while going down is probably enabled by just a small return spring. So the upshot being that when going up, it powers the mirror past an obstacle that normally would stop it if only a mild force were applied, but given the larger force, the mirror mechanism is forced backwards somewhat as the mirror scrapes by, probably knocking the alignment out temporarily until all the plastics and metal eventually flex back to their neutral state a day or so later. That may all be my imagination, but that's what I've noticed (mainly noticed while trying to get consistent microcalibration over many lenses, one being an alt that hit the mirror, and what I kept getting was inconsistency).

If I had the problem, and I knew how to easily adjust the infinity stop, that's where I'd begin, before hacking at the lens or mirror. This is not suggested much if ever here, so I thought I'd toss it out.

With the Contax 35-70 there is no easy way to adjust infinity as with lenses that move the complete lens group as a whole, since the rear element does not move during focussing, but it does move when zooming. Thus, adjusting infinity should only be done by choosing the correct adapter thickness.
Since the rear element moves forward from 35mm, you could just refrain from using the very widest end of the zoom and you should be safe from mirror issues.

only have had mirror hang on the 5D.. so far the 1DIV.. nothing at all. Mirror hang on the 5D has never effected photo.. just have to shake the cam to get the mirror to go back to normal before taking another pic.

I would very much like to use it on the 5DMkII, I just in no way want to damage the camera.
This is a very expensive item for me.
I see no marks on the mirror front, but I can almost be certain it is striking going up, as it is stuck hanging when released to reset.

Then why don't you try the procedure to modify the lens which Anden described? He was able to resolve the mirror clearance problem...

It may come to this.
Right now using it on the 40D to get acquainted w/ it first.
I will post some shots instead of whining...

Quicky before the rain, crop view, and re-sized:

Shrug, looks out of focused when cropped.
I notice this lens is a LOT harder to focus than the excellent manual Mamiya's I have.
Oh, this is wide open, I forget if it's in macro mode?

Nice butterfly although it's frontfocused, and you were pushing it with 1/30 there (should have raised the ISO).

I'm still trying to get the hang of focusing this lens.
It isn't as easy as the manual Mamiya's I have.
I use live view.

Do you recommend higher ISO for the reason of movement blur?
I am no where near the level of the posters here, but I have fun in learning all of this.
Seems a lot of times I get mired down in the technical parts.

Thanks!

I agree, this lens doesn't exactly pop into focus in most cases.

Especially with close-up/macro shots you should make sure the shutter speed doesn't get too long (1/30 is long for macro). With the high magnification, camera shake and subject motion (flower moving in the wind etc.) gets very noticeable. You can easily use ISO 200-320 on the 40D. With ISO 400 make sure you don't underexpose, otherwise it starts to get grainy. With the 5DmkII you have more room to increase ISO without much penalty.

Nice additional samples too. I don't recommend live view for handheld macros though, by the way. With your arms stretched you're much more prone to move the camera out of the point of proper focus. The focusing technique for macro is to slowly rock backward and forward to move the point of focus. You turn the focus ring basically only to change magnification. If you're left-eyed, I also recommend this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDsx3-FWfwk

Anyway, keep at it and have fun.

I saw somewhere that this lens front lens group rotates on focus.
I guess this kills the use of a Cokin, or Lee filter system ?
Not that I have either filter system, but they do look appealing, though, initial cost is high.

Doesn't kill it, as you can rotate the Lee holder on the adapter. It just takes some time getting the focus set, and then holding the focus ring while orientating the filter holder.

Might as well throw in a cross post from the alt-image thread...

The front lens does rotate but "usually" in shooting landscape you're focused out at infinity plus or minus and the little bit of rotation doesn't effect the use of filter much - but you do need to pay attention to it. I use polarizers and the Lee holder on this lens very often.
