I could go for that! Especially the 12-24 UWA.

Maybe also a small Oly PEN (i.e. not dSLR) type body with an ef lens mount.

With an electronic viewfinder with minimal time lag, and a set of small lenses designed for the short backfocus distance (no mirror box) plus an adapter ring to use EF and EF-S lenses on it.

Canon needs a 3D...but make it for 1999.99
in order that it wont interfere with 5Dmk3 sales at 2599.00

In Canon's heirarchy, 3 has been a higher-level camera than 5 so I wouldn't expect a 3D to sell for less than the 5D. Although, I could see your description as one for the next rendition of the 5D whenever that happens. But with 21+ mpx, not 16.7.

Almost forgot a new Canon Extender Mark III would be awesome. Something similar to

The 5dmkIII will get the 1DsIV sensor a year after, so do not expect it before mid-2011 at best. If Canon makes a 3D, it would be priced way over the 5D2 anyway.

My top choice would be an EF-S 50-150 2.8 IS. I have the Sigma and, well, its a Sigma... But the light weight and 80-240 2.8 equivalent range is a dream on the 7D.

I'd buy a 50-150L f2.8 IS, not that canon would ever make it...

I don't know, Tokina, Pentax and Sigma all make something similar and they are very popular. Who wouldn't want a light and fast telephoto?

I see you also mentioned Live View as an example of a feature to remove. Again, this is similar to the video feature I used as an example. I am reasonably sure the 40D has everything needed in hardware to do Live View. There's just no SW in the 40D to do so. Canon adds the SW to add value to the 50D, and they can charge for it. Taking it out of the 50D doesn't make the camera cheaper to produce.

Things that might make the camera actually cheaper would be putting in an older Digic, older AF module, smaller sensor, smaller LCD, less cache for the buffer, etc... generally these aren't the things people most want removed from their ideal no-frills camera.

I'm not trying to be argumentative. Just having a conversation.

Actually the 40D already has Liveview but I see your point

Too bad it couldn't be an EF 50-135/2.8 IS. Excellent range for portraits on FF. Traditional tele-zoom range on APS-C (80-216 FOV equivalent) . Even on APS-H it would be useful (65-175 FOV equivalent).

I would love a 50-150 2.8 IS. Or a 30 1.4/1.8 but they would probably be ef-s. If they both have USM then I would be jumping on them in a heartbeat.
I wonder how many crop users like myself would sell their 35L for a EF-S 30 1.8 w/USM if it was sharp wide open?
I also wonder how much a ef-s 50-150 2.8 IS would cost?

A FF 7D for $300 extra, heck I'll take 2 at that price.

Now you need to stop smoking the wacky tobakky.

why not do a Sony an do a FF for under 2k..if Sony can so can Canon
Sony has done this with Blu-ray players and the PS3 build em and take a loss

Sony full frame cameras are stripped down models. No Live View, no video. Two things that are now in demand for most camera markets. According to sales figures, Sony full frame cameras have not sold well either.

Something like a 1D body but with 1.6x sensor. On my 40D my battery grip always stays on but i have to keep tightening the screw.

Good to see a reasonable viewpoint

Thanks Tim. The 5d2 is my favorite camera (air sickness bags can be found in your seat-back).

I'm a strong admirer of the feckless dullards (politely speaking of course) running Canon.

What new can they possibly bring to the market which would allow me to take significantly better pictures an/or do it more easily ?

400 f/5.6 IS.....that's about it.

Now, a little fantasy here.....400 f/2.8 DO would be very nice too if its IQ would be on the level of 400 f/2.8L. Yet, I certainly wouldn't wanna pay $9,500 for it.

Books on composition and studies of style would be cool.

Drag everyone from being gear fetishists

dwweiche wrote:
I think there is a misconception that removing features to create "no frills" or "basic functionality" cameras means companies can sell cameras for less. I think it goes the other way. Here's an example.

Before video, DSLR's already had the hardware necessary to do video. They just needed the software. Once that is written, it is probably largely portable to all camera tiers. So in this instance, the camera manufacturers take current HW, add a SW feature, then charge more for the camera. That's how you add value to charge more.

So, removing features like video and charging less would negatively impact profit, because the camera manufactures can't 'take anything out' of the camera to make them cheaper to produce. It's "just" software at that point.

Know what I mean? I've had some Mai Tai's so maybe I wasn't as eloquent in print as I sounded in my mind

Depends. I know that the T1i shoots at a slower frame rate than the 5D2 and can't record 1080p video faster than 20fps. This probably has a lot to do with the throughput in the camera, be it memory, processing power or the bus speed to handle file transfers. Upgrades in these realms could potentially cost a bit of money, depending on what is changed.

Whoops, I was afraid i'd screw that up when I was typing it because I don't have a 40D, but oh well. I hope the point is understood by all

Sony can underprice because they have such *tiny* market share that they'll eat the loss just so that enough people will have bodies to use their lenses with.

There is no conceivable reason why Canon, being a DSLR market leader along with Nikon, should, or even could, do the same.

A lot of people seem to dream up absurd fantasies based on a complete misunderstanding of the technology and the market. Just because you *wish* it would happen doesn't mean it will, or even that it's possible. You may as well be wishing for a 500MP 35mm DSLR with 900 cross-type AF points all sensitive from f/1.0 to f/32, with zero noise, to go with your 100000mm f/0.7 super-duper telephoto that weighs only one pound and resolves 4000 lp/mm, all for $1. And the irony of this is that some people would still find reason to complain how it's not good enough or that it doesn't meet their needs.

Normally I would just '+1' a post like this, but that reply is equivilent to a number I cannot be bothered to type. Bravo sir.

Yeah, but it won't be a 3D. The sony lacks some of the bells and whistles to get that price. No way a 7D with FF sensor would be under $2K. Maybe they'll confuse us and release a 9D that's FF and under $2K.

well why not a no frills FF that does the intended job...pictures no video ect

I look at the old EOS3 just a downgraded version of a 1v...Canon doesnt have this in their line-up the 5Dmk2 isnt it....like I refered back a 16.7 mp FF,with same metering and A/F as a the 1 series,no live view ect plain jane camera

Because no frills doesn't sell.

Although it's probably a little to close to the 1D Mark IV's release, I think they might release the 1Ds Mark IV.

I'm hoping for something like new telephotos-300mm f/4L IS II, 100-400mm IS II, AND 500mm f/5.6L IS.

I hope not. Let Canon shake the bugs out in the 1D Mk IV model before introducing the top of the line 1Ds Mk IV.
