I just received this heart breaking news and wanted to make sure his dear friends all knew. This came from his friend Billy via e-mail
Denise,
Dave passed away today at 2:15
I saw him this morning at 10 and he was doing ok.
I am sorry to be the one with bad news but I wanted you to know.

This is very sad news. My deepest sympathies to his family, he will be missed greatly and his passion for photography and the green herons will live on as he was an inspiration to us all, here at FM.

This has got to be the saddest day this forum has ever experienced. My thoughts and sympathies go out to Dave's family. Dave was a fantastic photographer and forum member. His willingness to help others was second to none. He was a great inspiration to me and I know to many others. He will be missed greatly on this forum, the man was a N&W icon.
I only conversed with Dave a couple of times via email. A sincerely wonderful man who will be missed by all he touched. God Bless you Dave, rest in peace.
By the way I believe as much as he was a beloved and valuable member of FM I would vote that we ask Fred Miranda to rename this forum the Dave Phillips Memorial Nature/Wildlife forum. Just a thought.
Dave, your spirit will live on here at FM. All the people you touched and helped will help others and continue your legacy. You were always willing to lend a hand, but I thought your greatest asset was your incredible sense of humor. You had the ability to lift eveyone's spirits and the talent you had for those NG covers was amazing and hilarious. That's how I will remember you. Save a place in heaven for me cause I want to shoot right next to you when I get there. God Bless.
I remember when Dave (Dave in LA)first showed up on this forum and I thought that he was from Los Angeles, CA because of the "LA". I guess that's a reflection of how provincial some of our mind tends to work. Then it became evident from seeing more of his posts that he was actually from Louisiana. He quickly put a personal stamp on N&W posts with the numerous posts of Greenies in the swamp. Then came the National Geographic covers .................
Dave .......... You will be remembered and missed by many on this forum, as on others that you participated in. For you have left your mark on those forums and boards, as you have on the photographers who participated. Find your peace and rest peacefully.

I made the same mistake and the same realization Ken.
You have to love a person who loves Greenies. I will miss your sense humor, playful posts
and not least of all your great wildlife photography. Peace be with you Dave.
A heart heavy sadness indeed! I'll never shot another "greenie" again without thinking of the fun you had with them.
R.I.P Dave & may your sprit be free as you now freely roam your beloved nature!
