p.2 #1 · UPS MAJOR FAIL

I think all-caps "major fail" designation is over the top... even without the fact that it's nearly Christmas and the East coast was just hit by one of the biggest snow storms of the last 50 years.

Mistake? Sure. Worthy of a refund on shipping? You bet.

But come on... should I be posting "Associated Market. Major Fail." the next time the supermarket accidentally charges me for three cucumbers when I only purchased/took home 2?

How about: Consumer, last-minute purchase of essential gear during Christmas = Major Fail

I wouldn't really pay too much attention to the tracking info. The tracking information you see is 90% speculation, there are pre-determined routes and times where the package SHOULD be according to how it was sent and what its origination and destinations were. There are only 2 or 3 actual scans. You'd have to call UPS to get more accurate tracking info. I've had plenty of stuff show up on my door where the tracking information still says it's in another state still.

I understand my using all caps lock whatever to express my frustration is immature. Ok.

Last minute purchase essential gear during xmas= fail??

I honestly don't understand why people don't really READ and understand my post. I am upset because instead of sending my package to NY, it is sent to PA.

By the way, this camera though important to me, is not "essential". This is not a gift for Xmas or needed in anyway for anything such as a special event, nor needed for any type of professional work. I just want one.

I understand X'mas delay and expect it.

They sent my camera FARTHER away. Ok?

Our office is in Rochester, NY and I had to ship via UPS something to a customer of ours about 45 minutes away in a town outside of Rochester. It takes one day, but UPS takes the package from here to a sort center in BUFFALO, then back here to the outskirts of Rochester.

When I worked for Kodak we used DHL to ship everything. Even if we had to ship something somewhere IN Rochester, the package would go from Rochester to CLEVELAND!!! back here to Rochester and then get delivered.

I might agree, if it were not for the fact that UPS often does this at any time of the year, not just during holidays and in bad weather.

It is common for the major overnight carriers (FedEx, UPS, USPS Express Mail, Airborne, etc.) to send ALL overnight shipments in the country to ONE centralized sorting facility before the packages are then sent back out to their various geographical delivery areas. When someone in the pentagon, for example, sends a memo to an office down the hall via FedEx overnight, that memo enjoys flights to Memphis and back before being delivered to a location that is just a few hundred feet away from the originator (why our government seems to think this is more efficient than simply walking down the hall is beyond me, and the subject for another forum). So it is likely that because you specified "overnight" delivery, the package was sent via air to one of UPS's centralized sorting facilities and then sent back to Philadelphia for subsequent delivery.

Notice it bouncing back and forth from SLC and Idaho Falls? UPS Customer service was no help either...basically a "hopefully it will get to you". Um, thanks.

It's more cost effective to have a centralized sorting facility for a large geographic region than to have multiple smaller sorting facilities. In one case, you pile tons of boxes into a plane and fly it over to a location you pay for rent/mortgage in one place, pay for one set of employees, one set of lower management, one set of utilities etc.

With smaller hubs distributed all over the area, you have to pay for more employees, more management, more rents, more utilities, gas for all the trucks that go to/from the smaller hubs to/from the airports (as opposed to larger facilities which are attached to one larger airport). Moreover, the organization would be even more complex than UPS's current organization (which is already pretty darn complex)...just to save on airplane fuel.

If UPS were a smaller organization, you would be right. However, considering the many hundreds of packages going everywhere, singular, larger facilities make more sense than multiple smaller facilities.

A couple years ago, I participated in a trial in Miami. When it was time to come back to Chicago, I had to box up and ship all of the materials we hauled to Miami. I shipped about 22 banker's boxes, 2 odd sized boxes and a large printer box. I shipped it all 2-day (we needed it, but not in a hurry). All the boxes, except the printer box, made it to the firm on time. The printer box suffered the same fate as your package, going between a UPS hub in Miami and an airport outside of Miami multiple times before heading to Chicago.

BTW, there's always the chance that the system status is wrong (due to the heavy volume & weather delays) and the package will still get delivered today! So, let's still have a little hope.

You see, a little 'hope'can go a long way! I realize there's some conflicting info but it looks like there's still a chance that you'll get your package today!

Christmas + Massive snow storm=Delay which I can handle.

But this is a UPS error, PA is to far off from NY. If that would my package with $$$$ riding on it I'm worry it'll get lost too.

Well, the tracking system is working and you'll get it soon. Enjoy your new toy and Merry Christmas.
