I took this pic of a "bluebottle" (AKA Portuguese Man of War) on the beach this morning - unfortunately only had the 18-35 mm with me but am experimenting with my "new" D200. I was struck by the colours when I looked at it in PSE hence the post.
Suggestion? getting it on a wider view like getting close and showing the beach also, would make it much more interesting but its a nice registry photo, the colors are pretty indeed!
Thanks Martin - I thought of the similarity to the fly also - bluebottle is our "local" name. When they have tentacles they sting like hell. This is one of the flotation chambers and is about 2" across which is why I had to get in pretty close.
You should have gone right up to it. And I mean right up to it. The 18-35 has a really close focus so you could have been right on top of it & still managed to focus on the Portuguese Man of War.
Then you should have put the lens at about 20 or so mm had the Portuguese Man of War be close & huge in the shot - yet managed to show the beach as well. But you should have been right down in the sand with it. That would have made a super neat shot.
I hope this situation presents itself to you soon again so you can try it.
Enjoy the D200 - I love the colors out of that camera. So I miss mine.....

Thanks Lil, the beach is about 15 minutes away so I'll have lots of opportunities - if not with bluebottles with other little critters and I'll try to put your advice to good use as I have in the past with the birds.
