So I know you all are going to flip when you see the watermarks but I had a fellow lava photographer basically yell at me for not better protecing the shot when he saw my first upload. He apparently has had people print images off the computer and the web size for this one is HUGE (10x40 @ 300dpi).
As for the photo. This is about 160 degree view of the newest lava outbreak that started while I was on the island. Far left is the ocean entry ~1mile away and the fg is the new lava and burning forest (including road that the lava covered and trapped us temporarily...we hiked around forest shortly after these shots). We actually spent about an hour resting by the lava/forest waiting for sunrise. Pretty nuts. I am including a full web version for detail purposes.
Again I'm sorry for the watermarks and please try and look past them. Much thanks
Wow - you are making it difficult for me to get thrilled about going back to merely trying to shoot flowing water when you have flowing rock. Did I mention I am insanely jealous?
These are pretty amazing images Aaron. My only consolation is that I know for a fact your color balance is distinctly on the warm side (maybe too hot too)
Incredible image, Aaron. The pano is able to really capture the 'journey to the sea' as it adds to land mass of the Big Island.
While Simon, and I were at Seven Sisters, we witnessed the loss of land through erosive wind forces in action. You, on the other hand, are able to witness the birth of land. What an amazing experience this must have been.
Ed - You said it. The whole experience of creation...so primordial. Will be posting more lava photos soon :-)
tim - those are indeed stars as it was still predawn and was using 20s exposures (see embedded exif...think it's there)
v- lava doesnt flow where I live either...at least not in the last 4.5mil years :-P
binh - someone buys it then i will tell you how it looks in print! i dont have the funds or gallery to print things just for me. :-p
Thanks again all...wanted to capture the scene of what one sees all around. Since we arrived in darkness I did not get to see where we were til the sun rose. And after spending 1+hrs 'trapped' waiting for sunrise in the middle fg...you can actually see another photog out there in the middle. More soon!
Aaron: What a capture. This image is a joy to view. You should send a small print to the local resorts; you may have some customers for the larger version.
Thanks for the post! I was mezmorized last fall but the lava we saw can't compare to what you have posted. I watch the posts from the gov't, and can't wait to get back. They were talking about lot's of activity, but your post is the first that puts that into pictures!
