They were shot at different times on the same day.
5D Mark II, Canon 16-35IIL, f/22, 100 ISO, Live View mode. Almost all adjustments were done in ACR with minor touch up in PS CS4.
The tree stump(s) according to theory, are about 2000 years old. Apparently, some scientists think that about 2000 years ago something cataclysmic happened that dropped a portion of the Oregon Coast at least 25 feet straight down into the ocean. Land seemed to cover up the base of the tree(s) and a massive tsunami sheered them off entirely! They were covered up by ocean surf and it was a long standing legend of locals for millennia until last year (08) when strong storm surf began to rid the underground dirt and sand and at the lowest tides began to display these tree stumps still rooted. To keep with the mysteriousness, awesome history and power of the place I went for a surreal approach.
The whorls and streams of water in the 1st are really cool, Mark, but I gotta go with the 2nd. As Cliff mentions, the water draws attention away from the stump.....too many competing contrasty elements.... and I really love the contrast between the stump and smooth water.
FWIW, I like the b&w version of your earlier set even more. Probably just me.
Second - the water lines in the first shot don't really do much for me in this exposure although similar scenes often work like this. The water motion here just gets blurred without really adding an aesthetic to the image ambience.
The second one has a much more pleasing sky with a great color contrast along the water horizon. The more ghostly effect of the much slower water here lend to the theme of the ghost stump anyway.
Hello Mark, two fine images. The first has a bit of a magic feeling to it - somewhat harder to suspend disbelief, but dramatic and effective none the less. The second does indeed have a dreamlike quality about it. Good work with both
I like the first. I love the waves in the background. It has energy and power. The foreground draws me in. Just a more interesting and powerful image to me.
Very different images. Same subject. They illicit much different emotions from the viewer so I say both. Really like the processing in both. Good wave motion in 1 (though see what cpw said about eye being drawn to water instead of stump). Needs to be viewed larger from away I feel.
Mark - great job on both ! The second one is more dreamlike and has a very simple color theme to it which is more pleasing to my eye. Incredible detail in both .
The stump in the 2nd has somewhat of a 'floating above it all' quality to it while the first provides a more 'interaction with the world' sensibility.
The 2nd obviously is closer to the one from last July, but not sure I prefer one or the other of these 2. Both are great.....just tell different stories. Hate to say it, but I don't like either quite as well as the previous B&W.....that one is just superb.
I too like that B+W version on the previous posting and would have tried B+W on these as well as an option, but when viewing the R, G and B channels in B+W they seemed a little uninspiring to me. Maybe when I get a chance I'll try two B+W versions here too. I think the previous B+W was unusual not only because the lack of color but also the image was taken when the waves were extremely frothy / foamy. I am now considering having the B+W version and then one color version in the gallery.

i am going #1 though they both have there own + & -
#1 just draws me into the scene so much more, #2 doesnt do that, seems more static.
how you liking that 5dmk2 compared to the 1dsmk2?
simon
Thanks very much Simon.
I love the 5D Mark II. IMO much better than the 1DS Mark II. I am making mural sized, silver halide, Fujiflex Lightjet prints and need every mega-pixel I can get and going from 16.7 to 21 has made a difference. Also, with stitching 21 mp shots it is getting pretty easy now to get the images well over 100 native mp, which is amazing when printed huge. Yet, I should say that if I was not making the really big prints I think the 1DS Mark II would be plenty fine in its own right. I do miss its heavy duty tank like feel.
