Has anyone used the Manfrotto 460 MG gear head ? It looks to be ideal with to use with a light weight compact .

Unless you need the precise control of a screw-drive head, I think this is a better solution for a light weight system.

My use is for close-up and macro photography. I hope the fine adjustment feature of this head will give me the precise control needed for my use. Although the RSS head is fine quality I was under the impression that a ball head is not as good for this type of work . Is this correct ?

Right. That's what I use the larger 410 geared head for; close-up, macro and bellows tilt-shift with LF lenses. The 460MG sounds like a great solution for a compact camera.

Are you sure this is a geared head?

I think the knobs are just lock offs.

You are correct. Unfortunately I did'nt find that out until yesterday when I stupidly bought the 460 home from Adorama. I am going to return it.
This still leaves me with the problem of getting input on which reasonably decent , low priced ball head to buy.
I see most of you on this forum use larger , heavier, cameras than I will ever use. I know also that most of you suggest the best ball heads which are too expensive for me.
My hope is that some
