Oh good idea, I will have Canon take a look at it. The guy quoted me over the phone for the AF board (if it was broken) would amount to $1000+ just for the part and $500 of labour.

i'm not sure i would trust that guy

AF board can't cost remotely, wildly anything like that

(unless since it is Mark I and out of production and a rare buy?)

sorry that happened

yeah talk to canon first and then some other repair guy too if need be

i'm not sure if you can get a personal articles policy without homeowners. call your agent. i can say though that state farm has always been great for us. not that we have made alot of claims, but the ones we have made in the past when we were robbed of a boat motor and generator, when our daughter totalled her vehicle, and most recently when i lost one of my 1.5 carat earrings. we had what is called a 'pairs clause' on the jewelry policy. even though i only lost one earring they paid out the full $20,000 to replace both. of course i turned over the one 1.5 carat earring that i had left. i don't have my camera equipment insured because i never gave it a thought until now. now though, i'm a little bit leary to ask them to insure my equipment considering what they just paid out for jewelry. i would be willing to bet that they pay out more for policies like personal articles than they do for anything else if you weigh the cost of what a personal articles policy cost and what they actually pay if they have a claim made. my jewelry policy is only $300 per year. i've been paying it for about 4 years now. on the other hand, our vehicles costs us about $1200 month. we have business vehicles and personal ones all together in an umbrella policy. we have only collected on the one accident that our daughter had about 9 years ago. figure how much we've paid over 9 years compared to the $12,000 that we collected for that totalled vehicle. and definitely go with the non-pro policy if you can.

yeah you can

in fact it is perhaps better to not attach it to homeowners to keep claims separate and not mutually affecting rates

state farm policy for a camera alone covers anything anywhere with no deductible for a reasonable rate

I wouldn't even think of sending it to Canon, they're rip-off artists when it comes to stuff like this. I'd send it to Midstate Camera Repair without a second thought, they could probably fix it for much much cheaper.

$2.04/$100 per month? or per year?

Sorry you dropped the lens. In the future, I recommend a supplemental insurance policy to cover your gear. For personal articles policy in the US, runs about $10 or so a year for every $1K of insured gear.

I just talked to my State Farm guy about insuring our camera equipment. If it's not used for business purposes (just a hobby), it was $1.38/$100 insured, added to our existing personal articles policy we have for jewelry and expensive instruments the kids play.

My State Farm agent said the same thing, even the 'pro' insurance is only $2.04/$100.

Per year.

If you are doing just part-time work, they have a part-time business personal articles policy too, around $1.60/$100 per year. The regular personal articles won't cover any paid gigs.

I will need to look into insurance. Am I able to get it without homeowner insurance?

Yes, you should be able to pick up a renter's policy and do the same thing as homeowners by then adding supplemental insurance for specific items.

with a likely deductable of $500 and the black mark of a claim make this unwise under most situations... better to wait till a pipe bursts and you have $35,000 in damage to make your claim.

I was going to say something similar.

Glad to hear the 85L owner will be well taken care of.

It is unlikely that a typical renters or homeowners policy will cover accidental damage of camera equipment. If the loss was due to fire or theft while the items were in the dwelling, then yes, it would be covered up to the policy limit (and subject to the chosen deductible). But dropping your lens carelessly would not qualify.

If you had a personal articles endorsement specifically written for camera equipment (because it is a high value item, similar to jewelry or electronics), then coverage falls under the terms of that endorsement. Some insurers, for example, may exclude losses in situations like theft from the insured's vehicle, or stipulate other conditions, so it is very important to read the policy carefully and understand what exactly is covered.

As for reported claims having an adverse impact on renewal premium, this does occur because previous claim history is predictive of future likelihood of a claim. However, it should be stressed that some companies do not use an experience rating factor, and certain policy types and/or certain types/amounts of loss may not cause an increase in premium. It is incorrect to state that any claim will cause the premium to increase upon renewal for every insurance policy.

Also, please note that it is generally not permitted to attach camera equipment (or any equipment) that is used in a business context (i.e. to generate income) to a personal lines homeowners or renters policy. A separate commercial policy must be purchased.

Glad you have a better than $1200 resolution to your problem. The insurance topic has been discussed quite a bit. As far as your generic hazard/fire policy is concerned, the personal property section is a joke. For example, I have a policy that covers $250K in personal property. But the limits for anything of any value are pitiful. Read $1000 for electronics, $2000 for jewelry, $1000 for firearms, $500 cash/bullion, etc. I...and most others...would be royally screwed in the event of an actual catastrophe. In order to get any reasonable coverage of anything you actually use and enjoy, you generally need a specific endorsement or separate rider. This comes at additional expense, requires very good record keeping, and generally requires an individual appraisal for certain items.

You need to be EXTREMELY careful about adding riders to your homeowners policy. A fact that people are often unaware of is a claim against the policy is a claim against the house, and that claim will stay with the house and pass onto potential future owners affecting premiums and insurability.

I don't know specifically how Farmer's works. I do know when I called my own homeowner's agent, the company that they referred me to (forgot the carrier) told me that THEY would not apply a claim on the rider against the house, but could not speak for how other companies would look at it in the future. Not good enough for me.

I'm not a huge fan of insurance in general (although I am a licensed agent here in CA as one of my many hats...), but for the amount of exposure my gear takes, I assume that one day I will indeed need to use it. I would never want my house premiums to go up, or a potential future buyer not be able to get a policy from the carrier of his choice, because I claimed a damaged lens against it. I VERY much recommend a stand-alone policy. I use Hill and Usher and get $2mm liability, $25K in gear (that pays replacement cost, not the cost of the deal I scored here on FM!!), $20K in office equipment, rental equipment coverage, 2nd shooter coverage...all the bells and whistles...for $700/year.

Unless someone has a history of claim abuse I highly doubt that one claim on a lens through your homeowners policy is going to stop someone from getting insurance for thier home.

homeowner's insurance is there for catastrophic events - nickel and dime a policy and it might not be there when you need it.

of course, a simple call to your insurance rep will settle any questions about this endangering your policy benefits.

I dropped my fisheye lens from waist height to wood floor about a year ago and my lens would not AF nor would the ring turn and do anything, I took it into Fixation in London (very reputable repair place) and they quoted me around £350 ($550) to repair it.

I didn't go through with it as at the time fisheyes were about £400 new, they are now over £570 tho! Grrrrrr. Its now on my list of things to get fixed at some point!
