Hi Guys, this morning i noticed some play on the 80-200 afs fixed to the d700 (bayonet). The play is very slight, nevertheless annoying. Any suggestions as to DIY, or should I send it in?
Unless it moves enough to dissengage the contacts... I wouldn't worry about it. I have a Sigma 100-300 that does the same thing but has never given me a problem.
Ive been wrestling with this on my D300. The lense takes awesome pics and still works but you get a little rotational play (can twist a bit but it doesnt wobble). There isnt any noticable brassing so it doesnt seem to be horribly worn or anything.
I may request a new mount if I send it in for cleaning and a checkup this winter.
A slight amount of rotational play is COMPLETELY NORMAL. It is just more noticeable on lenses with a large mass like the AF-S 80~200/2.8. The mount locking pin on the body bayonet needs to be ever so slightly smaller in diameter than the corresponding slot or hole that the pin drops into on the rear mount of the lens in order to allow for quick and easy lens mounts. If they were exactly the same size (no rotational play), getting the lens to lock on the camera mount would be a very fussy and trying exercise.
Unless the slot on the lens mount is very worn (and that will be obvious when you look at it), or you are loosing communication between camera and lens, it is nothing to worry about.
A little bit of rotational play is good, it gives things room for heat/cold expansion/contraction. I have a 24-70 that is just very tight on my D2x (ok on the D300) and I'm more concerned about that.
thanks for the reassuring answers. Its not that `i think it is faulty, but everything nikon is so nicely made, that this is a bit out of context...:-)! Agreed on the heat/cold play and the slot is definitely not worn out.
I was out shooting at the zoo Saturday with the D300 (D2x is still at Nikon) and my 300 f4 AFS was fine on the body, but when I added the TC14EII, I had some slop. I just think it is tolerances that become additive instead of cancelling out. It does give you a little concern when you aren't sure if you've pressed the lens release button by accident!
My 80-200 AF-S has a slight amount of play on my D90 body. While a little disconcerting, it hasn't affected IQ at all. My 28-70 AF-S has slightly less play, but it's still not perfectly tight.
my 80-200 AFS used to have play as well... I used it on a D1x back in the day. Never bothered to get it fixed, and it never proved to be a problem. Unfortunately both lens and camera were stolen from me... but insurance replaced them with the 70-200VR
My 80-200 AF-D has some play on my D50 that sends it in to error mode randomly. If the lens rotates a tad to the left (when looking through the camera) it may go into F--. Is there anything I can do about this? The lens has always had play but only recently has it been going into error mode. If I rotate the lens back to the right a bit and snug it up the camera works fine. I don't need to take the lens off to do it.
Zaitz, maybe clean the contacts first to see wether this gives improvement?
If not there should be something that can be adjusted on the bayonet, i think.
have the same on my 70-200VR,, was even worse on my Oly E3 and the 35-100,, know of no adjustment that will eliminate,, just part of the tolerance built into the specs,,
yes it can get annoying as some times it just seems more noticeable but the wiggle amount remains the same,,

My D700 does this also, but with only big lenses. Smaller lenses are fine and have no movement. I think it's just the more weight of the bigger lenses that does it.

Clean the lens and camera contacts. Then see what happens.
