This was a huge game so I decided it would be fun to shoot it. First sellout of the season, they even sold standing room only seats. I took some shots, was going to arrange them for a photo story type thing but i have to start studying for my final that is in about 7 hours Let me know what you think. Shot D90 fisheye shots with strobes and the D700 70-200 w a 1.7TC with strobes for the first and second period and then decided to shoot hi-iso so I could burst in the third period.
Denver won by a score of 1-0 with Marc Cheverie recording a shutout in his first game back after missing a few games due to a big laceration on his leg that occured during a collision Halloween weekend.
Comments and Criticism are greatly appreciated. Let me know if you notice anything odd, also I think my white balance is off but can't figure out what to do for a few of them (mainly the ones that I shot hi-iso).

#12 I like the juxtaposition between the coach's level headedness and the teams extreme emotion.

These look good.
I like the shots from the catwalks. I try to get up on them as often as possible.
How many strobes where you using? I was not happy with me results from The last hockey game I strobed. Might have been the placement, might have been the amount. I am thinking I need six for the rink.

I use the strobes that are built in, there are a total of 8, however unfortunately two of them don't have working reflectors. There are 3 just off the rink in the roof on each sideline and one at each end of the building. Also we have now found out that catwalk access is prohibited. I had previously been told it was allowed. My editor is working it out with the staff who are in charge to try to regain our access.

Great series... love the variety with the overhead angles... nice job. Crazy overhead of the goalie stretching for the save... really cool capture. Overall, colors are good, but I think if you drop the black point a little you'd really make the levels pop and even clean up the lows a little. Regardless, great set.

Tom, I did notice I had blown the ice a bit. My problem was that the strobes were all recycling at different rates for some reason (going to check it out later...using them today but not going to fiddle with the setup) so I tried to overexpose a little as I don't like the extra noise when I up the exposure in RAW, it is easier to underexpose it in post with RAW. Thanks for the comments. These will be my last set from above...until i am able to set up a remote which will hopefully be soon.

I also like the overhead angle because it gives you a clean background.
Great timing on all the action shots.
The one before the last , it could be "The walk of shame" even tough i don't who's coach is he.

I wish it was the opposing team's coach, then it would've been better. However Gwoz (as he's known around here) doesn't get emotional after wins. I always hear his interviews after the games in the press box and he seems to be very level headed.
Ooh and If anyone is wondering, #13 was not a goal. that Sioux player charging in behind the goalie made the save.

How on earth are the strobes set up there.
Terrible shadows on the overhead, especially for a rink that size.
I know they are not your lights, just wondering their placement.
To be honest, everything except 6 seems oof again.
Were your overhead shots hand held or by remote (I'm gonna go with hand held seeing as they are all different angles)? Because man if you shot those hand held during game action putting yourself up on the catwalk you need to start learning a few more lessons about ethics and safety when shooting sports. Never ever, no matter what, should you be above the crowd or playing surface during game action. The only time you should be up there is if your remote has failed and you need to get it down before it falls.

Rick, actually we had permission to be above playing surface in action, according to my photo editor but it seems the person who granted us that permission may been wrong. Also the strobes are placed badly for hockey (I noticed the shadows too, but it looks worse with only the center 6 on and not the end ones. The placement is 1 behind each goal and 3 on each side. As for the OOF. There has got to be something wrong with my lens, the front element was loose, I got it to stop moving and give me better quality focus but its still not where it needs to be. I'm going to bring it in to Nikon on Tuesday when I'm back in L.A. and have them check it out and I have a new 70-200 on order from Amazon.

Yeah, no matter what man, don't shoot from the rafters during a game, no matter who tells you what, it's just way to unsafe. Even a loose lens cap or hood can do a lot of damage from that height.
The light placement is definitely set up to shoot from anywhere in that rink, except the rafters. The light looks great in shots 10 & 11, so I am pretty sure they are made to shoot at the glass, and can guarantee the colors would be awesome.

I agree with you about the strobe placement Rick. The strobes were also set up to allow for shooting basketball (though I turn off the ones on the ends when doing that, and also to allow for shooting of other events that are held there. I don't go up there with anything but my two cameras with each having an attached lens and the camera strap around my neck.
I do plan on setting up a remote if I get my money from returning my elinchrom skyports in time (they only fired about 60% of the time so I'd have to shoot like 10 frames to get one where the strobes fired, and it wasn't a strobe recycling problem it is clearly a problem with the transceivers.
BTW I'd love to hear your thoughts on the second game of the series that i shot last night, just posted shots from it.
