p.1 #1 · Family portrait

Took on a family shoot for my brother and his new addition to the family. It was difficult because they wanted their pet dog in the portrait. Both dog and baby were not cooperating very well. Space was limited and the back ground was a makeshift due to them changing their mind about the color when they got there.
Let me have both good and bad.

Hi Joe,

First...my standard intro to anyone "new" to me on this forum...
My comments or suggestions below are not a criticism of you, your model, your talent or skill. I offer them in a friendly tone of voice and with the sole intent to help you with a second POV and set of eyes. If you read sincere questions and simple suggestions as "criticism" of you, then you will miss how I am trying to help you. All smilies I post are genuine and sincere.

Of course this may be your own "style" or your own "vision" and I suppose we can assume that the images look just like they do because that is exactly how you like them. That is OK too. It just shows that there are differences of "opinion" on what looks good. IF these are exactly what you want and like, then by all means continue making your images look like that and have fun doing it. As I always say: "Follow your own muse."
_______________________

In some shots the dog looks more important than the baby.

My Simple Suggestion: Avoid black backgrounds and black T-Shirts unless you have VERY good control of light and exposure and composition etc.

Another Suggestion for this group: Back up.

These shots are very tight (cramped composition) and I think you would have better images if more space was given to ALL living creatures in the picture.

Another Observation: in images 2, 5, 6, the infant looks like it is being handled like an object (like a football or something) with some awkward body positions and what looks like "passing the object" between the parents in one image.

My Simple Suggestion: Focus YOUR attention on the infant. Then modify the parents to suit the child. The child in these shots looks "secondary" to dog and adults ( who seem focused on "smile at the camera"). Make the child the FOCUS of the portrait instead.
_____________

Now...all those comments or observations are from a photographer trying to help another photographer.

IF your brother is happy with the images and YOU are happy and the Mother is happy...then you can just take these comments and put them in your memory as things to consider next time.

The good thing is it is your family (bro/sis in law/nephew?). So, you can shoot again and again and they would probably like that. IF you try some things differently next time (different background, different compositions, different moment) then they will see you as trying, learning, helping, and improving (possibly). So....

My Final Suggestion: Make it fun and tell them you have MORE ideas and want to do another session soon, so you can try some different things.

I hope these comments help you.

Thanks Steady. I was cuaght off gaurd with the black. Originally they wanted a white back ground and showed wanting black and wearing black. I agree with you on moving back from the subjects. I will definately make Baby the focus in the next shoot.

Thank you for the helpful information, can't wait to try it out.

These look very flat. They also look like "snap shots", not something that says "taken by a professional!!!!!" What kind of light(s) were you using? Where was your main light located? I would also read/learn about posing techniques. These look like the family just sat on the floor and you took a couple of pics.
