p.1 #1 · 7D wireless flash

Anyone try a 3rd party flash wireless with the 7D? Will other flashes work as slaves or does it have to be a Canon?

I assume it is using Canon's proprietary ETTL system which would require a Canon flash that supports slave operation.

Anybody tried Canon's own flashes with the 7D's wireless transmission? What do you think of it?

it works well with my 430exii. sometimes if there is something blocking the flash it will not fire but that has not happened to many times. since i got the 7D i dont think I have put the flash on the hotshoe at all, only wireless.
I would like to have a multiple flash setup with sunpack to save some money but just dont know if there ettl flashes will work as slaves for the 7D.

There is some information in another thread.

The built-in flash on the 7D functions as the master, hence it contributes a small but visible amount of light to the image. I confirmed this myself using a mirror.

Based on what I've read of other user's experiences, the distance is limited to about 10-20'. IOW, if you want distance, it's no substitute for a radio-signaled trigger.

It provides the same level of control as the 550EX/580EX series flashes, including the ability to set ratios, power, and channels. I have a 550EX and the user interface on the 7D to set up the wireless flash is better but it's still a bit clunky. With a 3" LCD, Canon could have chosen to design a nice user interface where the flash groups are displayed pictorially. Instead, the options are set via several pull-down menus and sliders. I never liked Canon's nomenclature for flash groups (i.e. (A+B+C), (A:B), (A:B C) is just too confusing).

Bottom line, the 7D's wireless flash control seems to work. If you have a 430EX, which doesn't have wireless master functions, or you just want to get your 550EX/580EX off camera, then having a 7D eliminates the need to buy the ST-E2 or another 550EX/580EX.

I don't know anything about Sunpak but I took quick peek on B&H and it doesn't look like any of their models can work as ETTL slaves.

There is a Sigma flash with master/slave ability.

I've tried the popup master function on my 7D and it works fine. Not as elegant as the St-E2: popup lacks near IR AF assist, command pulses are in white instead of red light and menu controls are not as fast to set as external controls. It's great for occasional users of wireless but if you use it daily you probably will want a better master.
