You can find out for yourself by reading the lens descriptions at the Canon Camera Museum. I think this is a great online resource - as opposed to your comment, which I think is just plain stupid.
not really (museum is best way to tell by date of lens) but also there are different IS systems that could/should be of the same generation. EG the 24-105 does not have mode 2 and wont like panning while other releases either side of it do.
All you can say is that the later the lense release date the better the IS system should be
The Museum describes the IS capability of all lenses that I checked in terms of how many 'stops' of advantage that it provides to that particular lens. I think that's the key difference between 'generations'.
