I dont think the $30 is the issue here. I think there are expectations from both parties not in sync with each other.
Here is my question, which i dont seem to see you explaining in the story:

1. What was the agreed time frame to deliver the photos if there is any.
2. Even though your friend is getting essentially a free deal (beside the studio cost of cos) One cannot argue that he should still expect a "professional job" at best, that is including quality of the photos and prompt delivery time that was promised (which leads back to my first question)
3. You cannot use the argument that because he is getting a free deal than he can wait until whenever and should not have any exceptions on the quality of the photos.

So before anyone can pass judgement on who's fault this is, we need to see the photos and also need to know the agreed time frame (or excepted time frame)

Very good questions. I'll answer them as detailed as possible.
1. Agreed time frame for photo prints was 1 month. Online gallery was up on agreed time frame.
2. I will send you a PM for the gallery because I do not want the url showing up on a public forum, for I will be taking it down soon.

I chose the best photos to edit and editted them to the best of my ability. Never once did i think I should treat these photos differently from paying clients. I was just as excited to do this shoot as I was for the next serveral clients down the road.

You might want to mention the studio fee in the OP...

You're flip flopping on your story. I think it's most likely both parties really screwed the pooch on this one.

I will say that someone who has the nerve to be yelling, swearing, become physical is most likely a total nutjob. I'd NEVER have anything to do with this caveman again. Is he a teenager?

smurfee and for all those who are questioning the quality of the photos,

I looked at the portfolio you sent and i have to agree with you the photos are of very high quality. Now i am no professional portrait photographer but i believe i have seen enough of them to make my judgement. Whether your friend likes them or not is a matter of personal taste BUT he should not have dis you based on the professional work you have done. The images are sharp, colors are balanced, compositions are strong. He has no right to do what he did especially one month was the agreed upon delivery date. I say for $30 he is getting a freaking deal. Personally i wont even do that for a friend, just too much work. BUT i think this is his loss, not realizing what a good friend you were. Let him go pay a lot more somewhere else and guess what? He will still not be happy with what he gets.

Guy sounds like a complete 12 year old. And 30 bucks? If 30 bucks is enough to send him into a physical attack frenzy, he may have deeper issues.

So, I just read this thread and can't understand why the guy was mad - if it wasn't over the money. Was angry because he didn't like the pictures?

And if anyone ever knocked a cup of coffee out of my hand they'd be wearing the next one, stoop or no stoop.

30 days seems like a long time to post-process pics. I do event photography, shot pics last night, about 2,500 images, and about 300 are getting posted tonight for sales. By Monday night, there will be more than 500 images up. I do a similar gig the next week, two the following week, and all will have images posted in 24 hours. And I'm doing lots of other things besides those.

I think the lesson is to under-promise and over-deliver. Someone agrees to 30 days, knock them out in 15 days. Someone says they want to see 30 images, show them 45 (unless they really only want to see 30).

Another comment you made that made me question things is that you rented a professional studio but something was wrong with the lights. That doesn't make much sense to me. But if you're inexperienced, I could easily see how you might not know how to control the lighting.

I'd love to see the images you delivered, esp if I could see the originals to see how much pp'ing you had to do.

Ron

Knocking the coffee out of your hand says it all---he has deep issues, and not only with you. If he had done that to me, he'd still be on the ground. Nobody deserves treatment like that.

Advice for you: work out financial details before future shoots, so there are no surprises later on.
Other than that, I side with you completely.

OK, so let me get this straight. You gave him a free studio session and paid half the studio rental fee (only $30 at that) and his pissed at you? ... and to the point of using language that gets you kicked out of a coffeeshop and then assaulting you by knocking your coffee out of you hands. (I'm taking your word that you were civil to him through the whole thing).

If all the above is true as you portray it, then leave the looser behind and don't ever deal with him again. He has issues and clearly he was never much of a friend. How well did you actually know him?

I'm not a professional photographer but I do do "favors" for cartain groups of people (family, friends and non-profits only) and cover various events. Since I work for free I'm very up front that I do my best, but I'm NOT a professional; and even if I was, this service is FREE. Also, I'm clear about my time table for getting picutres to them (always generous to myself) and that they get the "keepers" which may be significantly lower in number than what I take. I'm also clear that THEY are responcible for any costs other than my time and the equipment I own. If they are pissed with me after all that, it's there problem.

You have some sage advice here and a good request.

The only thing I would differ on is that 30 days is a reasonable time frame when doing work for free, otherwise, yes, it is way too long I tell people it will take me three to four weeks but get it done in two most times.

all is true from how i described it. I for one am not angry with him but more so dissappointed with how things were handled. I handled everything as professional as possible, trying to ask him what he didn't like about them but all he can say was it looks like they weren't editted and that they suck.

Very true, there seems to be a certain level of "you owe me" mentality when things are done for friends, and since he was helping me expand my portfolio, i tried my best to help him out as well. But things just don't turn out the way we expect them to.

The pics are professional - honestly, he had ZERO reason to be upset, they were very well done for what it looked like you were going for. Seriously, WTF is his problem.
