Somebody told me that the disk that came with the canon 5d had software on it that would let you do tethered shooting, does anybody know if that's so?
If it does, what else would i need besides a real long usb cable?
Yes it includes the canon DPP (Digital Photo Professional) application which should give you live view and remote shooting. All you need is a USB cable. I use a 15 footer myself.

The original 5D will NOT let you use live view with tethered shooting. You take the shot, and then it comes up on your pc so you can see if it was in focus or not. This is not very useful as opposed to live view on the newer models where you see the actual image you are going to get before capturing it.
Also, if you are running a 64-bit operating system
[such as XP 64-bit or Vista 64-bit] you won't be able
to tether to your computer, unless somthing has changed
recently. Canon didn't support 64-bit drivers for the 5D.
