p.1 #1 · Flower photography composition and lighting
Hi everyone, I was hoping someone could help me with flower composition in a studioesque setting. I will be taking the shots in a soft box so lighting will be fairly controlled and the camera will probably be on a tripod. I have several incandescent lights I can use as well as my 580EX II(with an off camera cord) so lighting has a lot of options. Any tips on light placement and general flower composition?

You want to create some shadows to give the flowers a 3D effect and make shore to use some fill light so the shadows are not too dark. For compositions have the flowers open into the frame and consider diagonals as there effective at creating drama. Take a look at my web site for some ideas.

Unless the room is dark, I doubt you will need a ton of flash if you already have the box lit. I guess it depends on what you want to achieve, just the flower on white bkgd. or more drama. I shot some on black bkgd. and was very happy with the results, using fill light and natural light. Keeping it simple, moving around for different angles. Don't be afraid to turn the camera and/or try spotlights. http://www.ocwildlife.com/Photography/Macro-2006/1234861_75MAQ#63875004_6Kay4-A-LB
