p.1 #1 · 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM or 24-70mm f/4L on a 7D?

I have pretty much convinced myself 17-55mm is optimal on the 7D.
I take lots of low light indoor photos and video of small (two legged) critters.

From what I've seen at the-digital-picture and others, 24-70 still has an edge on sharpness, even though 17-55 optics are L quality. However, gotta have IS for video, methinks.

I am also wondering how much of an improvement it'll be over an 28-135mm.
Canon should have kitted 7D with the 17-55, IMHO. But then again I probably couldn't have sneaked it past the better half.

And lastly, why is there a rebate on the 17-55?
Not that I am complaining, but this lens is so well regarded and seems to hold its resale value.

I had both and sold them for the 24-105 is. I like the longer reach for a walk around lens with the 40D. Now that I have the 1D I know the 24-70 would be too short. Not sure how it will do inside with shows. The IS want stop action, but you have good high ISO on the 7D.

I'd say 24-70L... I use it on my 5D2 for videos, and it's not bad (shaky wise)... Mostly on 24mm though. And, since you are already on the new camera bandwagon, you will probably get a full frame sensor camera next, and this lens will be awesome with FF bodies.

For shooting low light stills and video on APS-C? 17-55 for me.

Burak Baysal: The 17-55mm lens you will find hard to beat, as you must know. The rebate on its purchase price may have something to do with company cash flow, inventory, locking customers into the cropped-sensor camera line, etc.

I've owned this lens for about a year and a half now. It produces superb results.

I own the 28-135mm lens. It sucks. Want to give it away.

Anyhow, the 7D as an APS-C camera will surely bring out the best of the 17-55mm lens, especially with its IS, if properly used. The IS requires a soft touch on the shutter release button half way pressed until the IS locks. Then, a gradual, easy pressing on the shutter release button to operate the shutter.

Trying to operate the shutter by pressing the shutter release button all the way in one motion may result in a blurred image because the shutter may operate during the short time the IS takes to lock its mechanism.

I've also become quite interested in the 17-55 lately. Nothing quite like it in full frame, about a 27-80/2.8 with IS, and really top notch image quality, that is very cool. I think it is one of those lenses that are hard to pull the trigger on, so expensive for a non-L, but once you had it, it would be amazing.

And it would be night and day compared to the 28-135. Much better image quality and 2.8 is much much more useful.

The 17-55/2.8 IS is probably one of the biggest things keeping me from going to full frame...as Lance says, nothing for the full frame that lines up quite as well, since with the crop it's a 27-88/2.8 with IS....

I love it.

The 17-55 is sharper than the 24-70. That's why I'm waiting on the new 24-70 II IS that is rumored to come out next year to use on my new 1D Mark IV.

Actually, the 17-55 f2.8 IS would be more like a 27-88mm f4.5 IS on a full frame body. The closest thing is the 24-105 f4 IS which is both wider, longer, and has more control over DOF when mounted on full frame as compared to the 17-55 mounted to a cropper.

Where do you get the f/4.5 aperture rating from? The 17-55 is a 2.8 lens. When you mount a 24-70 on an APS-C body it's still a 2.8 lens as well. I think what you are confusing here is apparent DOF.

Why would it be f/4.5??

There is a DoF slight variation, but aperture is aperture.

I started with the 24-105 then got the 24-70 then the 17-55. I had a 1.6 crop at the time. The best of the bunch was the 17-55 by far. I had 3 copies of the 24-70 too. Now that I have a 1ds3, I can't wait to get the 24-70is when/if it comes out as expected next year. That's why I use a 35L as my walkaround right now, and not either of those 2 zooms.

Aperture has nothing to do with crop factor.

I also believe it's a EF-S mount, which wouldn't fit on a frame frame camera anyway.

Wait again...would it be f/4.5 from both a DoF *and* a "light" (f-stop) perspective? you mean I gain a stop and a half just moving to full frame? That doesn't sound right for some reason....

ok, I do remember that the DoF on the same-apertured lens is different on a crop body and a FF. But I don't think that extends to the exposure side of things....

I like the 17-55mm ... good for APS-C cameras ... wide enough that you don't really need another lens unless you're into really wide angles. My nephew - he had an injury on his head and so he looked kinda funny then with his red "hood".

f/2.8 is f/2.8 is f/2.8 no matter the body. What he is referring to is the apparent DOF, not the lenses light sucking ability.

You should have stopped there. That is, unless you want to purchase the 24-70 (or 24-105) alongside an UWA.

Welcome to FM.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.
