His face looks soft and could use some fill lighting.

I like the idea and the setting of this picture. But I agree with the above comment. Definitely needs a little fill

TO light this cheaply just a speedlight, light stand and a shoot through umbrella, and some sort of remote trigger or just a cable if you had to. If you had a bit more cash a small softbox would give you more directional control of the light. Westcott makes some nice stuff. If you want a good lighting reference look into the "onelight" videos by Zack Arias good place to start for a practical understanding of strobes. What part of Canada are you in?

tdurnan gave you some good tips but if you have to do it really on the cheap, you can use fill light in photoshop (obviously a fall back that is not as good as correctly lighting the original scene) and then using layers take the effect out of areas that you don't want the fill. My main question is where is the point of focus? I can't tell, did the camera back focus?

I rarely comment on images posted here in 'People' because my own work isn't so good by comparison. But I'd say here that a decent reflector would have put more light on his face and helped out just a bit. Otherwise I really like this one. It reminds me of old chicken coops from when I was a kid (more than a few years ago ). I used to make money as a teenager handling hay-bailing twine, with the square bales still attached, so seeing the bailing twine hanging from the ceiling brought back some fond memories. My first motorcycle was purchased with funds from working with hay.
Best,
AndyK
