Ok so I finally spent the money to by a monitor and printer calibrator system.
I bought the Spyder3 Studio SR. I got the monitor calibrated with no problems. I did a custom color profile for my Epson R2880 printer. I printed out the 255 color blocks and used the scanner to scan each color box and made the profile.
What I'm not sure is how to use the profile.
What I did was open a photo in CS4 and print. I chose let photoshop control the colors and chose the profile created. The print came out very dark and horrible. Am I supposed to let the printer choose to control color? If so how do I tell the printer to use the profile created with Spyder3 printer calibration tool?
When I didn't use a calibration tool and just chose to let the printer control the color and chose "Epson sRGB auto" The prints came out pretty good just didn't pop.
What flash said. also if in photoshop print dialog, you already selected the printer profile that you created with Spyder. Rendering intent set to saturation, images are in sRGB - that's what worked for me. My printing had never been easyer.
I do not have R2880, but these settings worked both for R220 and HP 130nr. Whatch other options that you may have activated or deactivated like black or white compensation...
