Hello,
Do most of you use a flash of some sort for your macro shots or available light? In the new year I will be getting a 1DsmkII as my first digital camera and while I shoot mostly landscape I would like to shoot some macro. Thank you for any and all help.
Your choice of camera has a flaw. I don't believe it has "Live View." If you are serious about getting into Macro - live view is a must.
There are some really interesting diode packages being offered which have very flexible lighting offerings from one unit. I would explore them.
Macro photography is a real challenge. Gus Cabos from Miami on www.birdphotographers.net is a magician with lighting along with several other contributors.
Think you'll find that the need for flash depends on what you want to shoot and how close to the subject you want to get. A fair number of shooters here shoot live, active critters at close distances, virtually mandating the need for flash lighting.
That said, however, there are also some excellent shooters here who shoot nothing but natural light. It's a judgement call, by and large, as to whether you want to use flash. Hope this helps somewhat.
Macro will not be my main interest, landscape is and I have made my decision on the camera already. I have a Canon 100 macro which I used with my EOS3's but always with available light. It seemed to me that if I used a flash, perhaps, it would open up more opportunities for me.
While I haven't looked into it extensively, I thought perhaps an off camera flash would be the way to go. Is there a thread that shows some of the set-ups many of you use? I did a search but not much came up. Thank you.
