p.1 #1 · Posting event photos on web

I've been doing web sales for a few years, and an issue comes up occasionally, I'm sure you've heard it. " I didn't give permission for my kid to be photod, posted, I'll sue etc... Web predators blah blah... I'm shooting a local youth "superbowl" for their league and have exclusive field access and apparently the uncle bobs are up in arms about being locked out. I figure public place, public event , no reasonable expectation of privacy. Of course if someone doesnt want to be shot I wouldn't solo them, just out of courtesy, nor will I deny another kid because the complainers kid happens to be in the frame. Just wondering about others experiences.
BTW if it was just me I'd tell them to FO, but since its a whole league it needs a softer touch.

Your response to anyone that complains should be, "I'll have the image(s) removed from my website immediately." If they push after that, you should ask them to speak with the person that hired you to shoot the event (provided you've given them a heads-up about the angry parent and been assured they have your back). Period.

I haven't run into this situation before, but I know it has happened to others. The above response is how I'd likely handle it.

I give parents the ability to "opt-out" of my galleries. I ask them to identify the photos of their child by file name & I will promptly remove them. It's almost impossible for me to figure out which kid is theirs so having them select the offending images put the ownership on them.

Good luck!
Kathleen

pdx,
I have not had this happen as of yet either. But have seen it come up before with others not sure if it was here or not. I would like to say that I would handle it like you mentioned (FO) but like you said probebly not the best route.
I think I like a combo of what James and Kat have mentioned, and would take into account that I would NOT remove all photos of the player like ones that just happen to have him in the frame/backside of player. Depending on the sport and age level that seems like alot of work. And your right its probebly disgrunteled parents and if one gets you to do it and that one tells another you may end up with not alot in your gallery.
More than like likely the kid is probebly not one of the star atheletes of the team, they tend to be very happy to see lots of photos of themselfs.
I'm sure Hammy will be by with his take on this and with the volume he,luke and Paul do they could and have delt with this many times.
Bottom line I think like you do, Public place, Public event and you were invinted to be there.

Jeff

Lol going through the gallery from a regular season thing that has him in an uproar, cant seem to find anything yet so prolly a bench warmer... Funny the only people squawking is the team with there own semi-good shooter. The big game is in a D1 venue and sideline access is restricted and they just can't seem to accept it. This is totally in line with the national body's handling of events as well. Management has said this team has been a problem all year.
