p.1 #1 · 5D Mark I or D300?

Hi everbody!

I have to make my decision bet ween 5D Mark I or D300.
My purpose is portrait. And a little bit landscape.

Both look good, the 5D is good but its technology is kind of old, easy to be out of focus
the D300 has a better focus system...

But I don't know!!!

My 5D is always in focus, when I'm paying attention to what I'm doing.

7D? Do the lenses you have fit both systems?

Since you're asking, I'm going to assume you're a little green, is that true? I don't mean that as a negative to you at all, but I think it's important to know before recommending a camera. I'm also going to assume you don't have an investment in lenses.

My opinions:

5D cons - You're going to hate the frequency of sensor cleanings. Once you get over that initial irritant, and become efficient at cleaning, it's no big deal. Still, it's a deal breaker for some. This camera is a bit behind in modern features, some of which the D300 has. The AF may leave you a little frustrated, unless your expectations are realistic, simply consider this a portrait/landscape camera. It will do sports decently with center point AF, and giving the camera a moment to track. The body is not sealed very well, there must be some gaping holes for all that dust to make its way to the sensor!

5D pros - Excellent image quality, and will produce great files with decent glass. Since it's full frame, the 24-105(or 24-70), is likely to be your new best friend. You could loctite the 24-105 to my 5D, and I'd be pretty darn happy with that. Canon also has a much better lens selection in my opinion(with one caveat I'll mention with the D300).

D300 pros - The D300 is a significantly more modern camera, and is just a great all around performer. The AF is noticeably better than the 5D. Live view, some people don't care about it, but I find it pretty handy for macro work. The D300 also has much better weather sealing than the 5D. You can also use a ton of old nikkor gems, they will all be manual focus(all those old Nikon lenses can be used on the 5d too). There's many more modern features, I would recommend you compare the two over at dpreview and see if any strike you as important. The D300 has a way better LCD, though that's something I've never been very concerned about, maybe it's important to you?

D300 cons - Ultimately the image quality will be less than the 5D, though you probably wont notice until you start printing big. I would say the ISO comparisons are close enough to be a non issue, though many don't like the flat smudging that the Nikon does.

As an all around camera, without a consideration for AF lenses, I think the D300 is a better camera hands down. From a strictly IQ perspective, the 5D is the better camera. The selection of lenses alone makes me shoot Canon. I don't like carrying around fat 2.8 lenses, and Canon just kills it in the f/4 category. The 24-105, no Nikon equivalent. The 70-200/4, no Nikon equivalent. The 400/5.6, no Nikon equivalent in AF. Any f/1.2 AF lens? Nope, nada, none. If you only see a kit lens and a 50/1.8 in your future, I would go with the D300. More important than the hardware, is your creativity, have fun with whatever you choose!

Having used full frame cameras I would have a hard time going to a 1.5 crop camera. The D300 seems like a competitor to a 50D/40D in the Canon family

5D.

Because you don't need the super fancy focus for portraits, people don't move around that fast/much. I used a Rebel XSi for portraits for a year for portraits and lots of people raves about the sharpness of the images (the trick is to get L lenses or primes! )

However, I recently bought the 5D2, and the full frame sensor is just awesome. I know I can tell a difference from my XSi files. I have friends who still shoots weddings and portraits with 5D1, and the end results are usually better than mine, since I am still learning.

For Landscape, you are shooting at such narrow aperture that you don't need pro AF, and full frame will let you shoot wider than a crop sensor.

With that said, I have seen MANY nice images with the D300, so good luck!

One issue I would feel worth mentioning from my experience with both cameras is high ISO shooting. From ISO 800 and up, you'll get better images from the 5D. The D300 resolution begins to break down. I also never liked the fact that the D300 base ISO was 200. On the other side of the equation, the D300 outperforms the 5D when it comes to being versatile and flexible in various shooting situations. It's certainly a more fun camera to use. The autofocus on the 5D just isn't up to the same level as the D300. The D300 sports live view which is very nice to have for portraits and landscape work. With the 5D, you're obsolete with that feature. Also, the sensor cleaning on the D300 seems to work pretty well. I've never really had to do anything with the D300 other than blow it out with a rocket blower. The 5D will collect specs on the sensor, but it's easily cleaned.

5D any time. Its AF is not the best, but the IQ quality is excelent even after 4 year from introduction. And it's full frame - well, I could never imagine I could shoot a crop body. But that's just me .

Do you expect many (if any) people to recommend the D300 over the 5D on a Canon forum ... seriously? I am completely clueless when it comes to Nikon gear but I can tell you the 5D and 5D II are both amazing bodies for portrait and landscape work and I would recommend it whole-heartedly.

Me too..without a second thought. No crop cameras can compare with full frame for many reasons. People move UP to full frame and not down to crop sensors.

Let me add my 2 pennies if i may I used the 5D for 3 years and now have the D300 as a back up to the D700.

D300 = great body, AF, sensor clean, live view.

5D = better iso performance and the better file.

what's more important to you?

Is this question also posted in the Nikon forum? Think about what they'd say, and then to a mental cut & paste with "Canon"...

Really, Portraits and Landscape? The 5D has held the title for these fields for quite some time now. 5D(FF/35mm) and Mediocre lenses produce stellar images. D300(crop 1.5) and excellent lenses do well also but you really are not doing a 1 to 1 comparison.

Go out and get the 5D....Congratulations, I knew you'd love it....

There is a big difference between FF and crop. The 5d MK I may be older, but it still takes outstanding images. I'd want a crop for sports and birding, but a FF for portraits and landscape. Its not really a contest between these two fine cameras, but between crop or FF as needed for yout type of images.
