I got my 5D MK II last week and started shooting. The image number has started from 0001 until it was 0398 in continuous numbering mode. All of a suden the file number become 9901 from 0398 . I have not changed the CF card and I am using Sandisk Extreme III 8 GB came along with the camera as a compliment. I don't know why this is happening. After 9999 then it goes to 0001 and agin it has jumbed the sequence. Is something wrong with the camera or what would the probable error in my opeartion. I am Nikon used for the last 15 years. Can some one advice me please. Thanks
I had the same problem with mine but I stuck an old card in and ever since my numbering has been off. I have only had it a week so I have not managed to sort it out either.

Did you swap the card to another camera? Do you format the cards when you insert them?
Fully format the card on a pc/mac and see what happens.
When the numbering jumps like that it usually means the cam is seeing a file or folder with a higher number in it
You went from 9901 - 0398 on one CF card, then when you inserted another CF Card, it jumped back to 9901 and started again, causing you to get duplicate images
This often happens to canon cameras for some reason (it doesn't realise that 0398 is actually higher than 9901 because it is in the consequent folder).
What I do is once you clock over to 0001, do an "Auto reset" and do that for every single card you have. Then switch to continuous when you start shooting. This way they all get reset back to zero and you don't have that problem
Because you had the camera set for continuous numbering, it does this:
It checks the card for the highest number and begins numbering from there. When you open the CF door, it stores the highest number in memory.
When you replace the card, it compares the high number of the current card with the number in memory and continues from the higher number.
When you format a card in the camera, it again compares the high number on the card with the high number in its memory and stores the higher number. Then after formatting, it writes that high number back to the newly formatted card...and starts from there.
Thanks for your information. But The number has jumped in the same crad which I formated before shooting. It is ok if the number has changed for the different card. But how can a single card can have different sequence numbering ? This may not be an issue for photograph , but I want to understand . Thanks guys.

Did you put in a different card between uses of the first card? If you ever put in a different card with a higher number of exposures, the camera will compare the number of exposures in its memory with each card you insert, and take the higher number.
