I voted only when I'm taking pictures of dogs, for some reason they like to lick the lens.
I've got a friend who shoots photos of dogs a lot. He wraps a strip of bacon around his lens hood. Win win, they would lick the hood instead of the front element, and you have their undivided attention.
Of course, protection. Yes, if you shoot in the mud from a motorcross or rallye. But not even for some drops of rain. Haven't we seen how UV filter can kill bokeh? Introduce incredible heavy flare and ghosting? Or otherwise detoriate image quality?
Nude is better for EOSfun A filter is better for the camerastore though profit margins on this simple glass are higher than almost any other product in a camerastore.
Only in conditions where there is dust or invasive moisture...does nothing to improve an image and any impact violent enough to damage the filter will jam up the lens itself. oooooooolllllddddd question.

I voted for "only in rough weather". Otherwise the lens is nekked except for the hood.
Well Don, as all good southerners know, naked means you don't have a filter on you lens, nekked means you don't have a filter on you lens and you're up to something!

As a guy who spends about 20hrs/wk training dogs, that is simultaneously one of the grossest and most hilarious things I have read here in a long time!

I'm the guy who wraps the bacon. bring a good amount of bacon. use it as a reward. just tear a small chunk off and give it to the dog. if you have an assistant, they can play bacon decoy for you. just give em a few pieces and have them stand where you want the dog's head pointed.

You so need to post some of your dog photos on here Pete.
