p.1 #1 · My 1st Macro

I'm going through all my old files (house cleaning)

I can't even remember what lens I used . I think it was the D60 with the 100-300 and some lens that I put on the front. Date was 3-30 03 about the time I convinced Fred we needed a macro forum .
Enjoy

Well it looks like the exif shows a 50 so it must have been my EF50 1.4 with another 50 taped to the front in rev . Elec tape.

Amazing how much your photography has changed Tom with a little time, experience, and patience

The one that got me hooked, taken with a Canon 20D, an EF-S 60mm, and a camera mounted 430EX.

Those little Mason Bees are still one of my favorite subjects...

Ah good memories- I suspect you got more excitement/enjoyment from that shot than many of your later superb shots

Tom a very cool shot, looks like you took this looking down a drain pipe or through a tube, I'm sure that useing a reversed lens gave you that effect.

A very nice first shot

Man, you were good 'way back when'! Guess I haven't been shooting long enough to be nostalgic over some of my first attempts.

interesting post. I enjoy the evolution I see in your technique and gear. That second bee portrait is a stunner.

Edit: maybe the gear is the same for the second pic??

Completely different gear: Canon 40D (F13, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MPE-65mm macro lens (@2x) + a diffused MT-24EX macro twin flash (-2/3 FEC).

Hi John,
I didn't want to hijack Tom's post, but it has gone that way anyway. . .
Your hairy little friend in the purple flower is now one of my 'top' images.
Beautiful colors and a very cute looking subject. . . . awesome

It wasn't my intention to hijack the thread Bruce -I took Tom"s post as a "show your progress" invitation because I've made similar posts. I think it's important to do a post like this one since all too often newbies think that they should be doing really well from the beggining because of the images they see here. It takes years to get good at macro, and I've seen very few people who had the necessary skills to shoot well from the beggining. Anyone who projects the impression that they've always been a top shooter in macro isn't being honest with you.

Sorry Tom

Geez you're touchy John!
I didn't suggest that YOU had hijacked the thread. I simply said that seeing that the thread had been hijacked anyway, this would give me the chance to comment on your marvellous pic of the bee. If it is going to be this hard to compliment your images in the future, then you might as well go and stick 'em where the sun don't shine. . . .

Come on Bruce: I'm the only one to add a "before and after" to this thread -so if you weren't referring to me then who where you talking about?!

Last: There's nothing in what I wrote that was "touchy" -all I did was try to explain why I added photos to this thread. I do appreciate your comment on my images -but I didn't add those photos to get comments (and I didn't say "thanks" when dhollbilder commented on the shot either). I added them to show that I too was a newbie once. Maybe you need to cut me some slack and not read more in to what I post than what's on the screen...

Quite simply, and an end to this rubbish!, it was dhollbilder who hijacked the thread by re-posting your images and commenting/asking questions about them. . .

In other news, did anyone see Henry's blatant handball against Ireland?

*snicker*

Tom, looks like you already know about photography before you started macro yes? It's not as well lit as your later shots but the framing looks great.
