p.1 #1 · indoor hockey shoot

I have been approached to shoot a junior hockey tournament by some friends, They all know me from my other sports I shoot so I said yes,(not knowing what I was getting into)
i went to a game and did some shooting and was not happy with the results

This post may be better off in the Lights Section but I have been reading about the use of indirect lighting (strobes) in the arena so

So,,,,I am on the Alienbees website ready to do some damage to my credit card and wonder if anyone has some advice on a good starter set of equipment.
To be honest I know nothing about using lights except what I can understand from these forums and will be picking up some books to supplement the knowledge (thats how this photo addiction all started for me anyways,,,)

I was thinking about 2 Bees set up at one end of the arena (do I need special reflectors to extend the reach?. Celing about 50 feet) so I could focus the light on offense , then defense for the tournament of each team. The glass was also a challenge but I think I might be able to get above it (without being whacked in the head by a puck) and I have a remote setup I was going to try to get some neat group shots as well (Zigview)

thanks

I wasn't going to post, because I don't know anything about strobes. But it's been a couple of hours, so I thought I'd at least offer some ideas for your non-strobe shots. Are the results you're not happy with in your Port Moody gallery?

For one thing, I think they are underexposed. You should be good with the 1/400 to 1/500 shutter speeds, but bump your ISO towards 1600 until you're almost blowing out the ice. That might be tricky, because it looks like the lighting in that rink was pretty uneven.

Also, not sure how you're processing your images. The amount of contrast the glass cuts will depend on how clean the patch of glass is and also the angle you're shooting through it. But I find curves work wonders:

I'm sure strobes will help a lot, but you can probably get more out of the non-strobed shots as well without a lot of expense.

Hope this helps,

Mark

Yes
The photos were largely unprocessed and underexposed as I have never shot in that environment
Picked up a lot of good tips and am heading out again soon for another shot

Thanks

Lights...

I shoot with 4 White-Lightning 1600's to light an entire arena, although 6 -8 would be preferred. The lower the number of lights the less places you'll be able to cover. Two lights Alien-Bees 1600's or WL 1600's with the sport reflector should be able to fill the blue line to goal line area quite nicely.

This might be of some help for you:

There is way more to shooting with strobes then just buying them.

1) How are you going to hang them? Super clamps, light stands?
2) How are you going to power them? plugged into AC or battery? is there power close by or do you have to worry about people tripping on the cables?
3) How are you going to trigger them? wireless (PocketWizards) to PC-SYNC cord (no-no)? I use a pocketwizard on every light, but that's me. You can get away with hard wiring each light with some lamp cord, and run only 2 pocket wizards...
4) Do you have insurance?

Sample budget for two lights:

2 x The AlienBees B1600 Flash Unit $359.95 = $719.90
2 x 11-inch Silver Reflector $34.95 = $69.90
3 x PocketWizards = $169 = $507.00
3 x PocketWiazd FlashSync (MM1) cables = $17.95 = $53.85
2 x Super Clamp With 5/8" Stud = $49.50 = $99.00

That's a start for you... $1,449.65
All prices except AlienBees from B&H...

you might check to see if lights aren't already in place and if you can get permission to use them. Several rink s we work with have mounted lights tha tyou can trigger. (with permission)
