p.1 #1 · Replace Marumi WPC CPL filter? | |
I'm a bit concerned about the results of the polarizer filter tests posted on lenstip.com. I know folks should not obsess about their gear and just use it but.... Here's the deal:
I have a Marumi WaterProofCoat (WPC) CPL filter which the tests placed as last with extremely poor marks for flaring, scattering, and contrast. I haven't used it much thusfar but have not noticed any such poor effects. The Marumi Super DHG C-PL on the other hand received glowing comments and tied for #1 in the tests. I've tried through a major outlet to obtain comments from Marumi Japan in response to he Polish test results but thusfar no response. I honestly don't know if the sample in the tests was bad, the methodology used flawed, or what.....
Here is what I do have in the way of comparative descriptions:
"This WPC C-PL is the Highest Grade Professional use filter by Marumi, the Waterproof Coating with Super thin 4mm frame with front threads incorporates newly developed layers of hard coatings that are Waterproof, Oilproof, Smudgeproof & Scratchproof. These filters WILL NOT scratch. Anti-fouling so you can wipe clean easier than any other filter and these are fully water-proof (sealed). These ultra low flare, anti-reflection coatings also eliminate ghosting/flaring in images, giving you a sharper and more contrastier image with better color tonality. This Circular Polarizing Filter is the best filter on the market for your digital camera today. The Polarizer will work equally as well on wide angle, std. length and telephoto lenses as well. Especially nice on zooms since the smaller thinner ring easily allows your lens hood to fit over the filter and attach to the lens. The rings also have serrations along the rim so that you can easily grip the filter edge so you can easily attach/detach the filter or twist the outer rim for polarization effect. This filter has been made especially for digital cameras and incorporates improvements that make for better pictures. *Why WPC-Waterproof Coat instead of the DHG Digital High Grade Coated?? The DHG Digital High Grade are multi-layered with a variant type of multi-coatings that is softer not colorless whereas these WPC-CPL have colorless "Hard" multi layer coatings. Colorless coatings eliminate the possibility of color affect in your photos. Both the DHG and these WPC-CPL have low flare, anti-reflection coatings that eliminate ghosting/flaring in images, designed specifically for Digital Cameras. The main feature that sets the WPC (Waterproof Coat) apart from the DHG line is that the WPC-waterproof coatings are Scratch-Proof, Water-Proof (water rolls right off), Oil & Smudge-Proof (wipes clean easier and better than any other filter) whereas the std. DHG and Super DHG are scratch-resistant, oil, water repellent and although they will hold up and be sturdy, they are not quite as well as this Water Proof Coated Circular Polarizer will. Especially useful in harsh or inclimate weather where you may need extra protection against wind and rain also environments such as the desert where the wind and air may carry debris such as sand & dust which is highly abrasive and will scratch the soft multi-coatings that are typically used on most multi-coated filters. This "Hard Coated", super high quality filter is extremely useful and made to last for many years to come."
So like I stated at the beginning of this post, I'm somewhat concerned that what I have will exhibit "issues" under future difficult conditions. Are my concerns misplaced? Or should I simply replace my filter with a Super DHG version? Anyone else have and use a WPC C-PL?
