I have a Canon 10D...with the BG-3 battery grip and two lenses package, I bought all together off eBay.
The lenses are:
CANON 28-80mm 1:3.5-5.611 lens
KODAK 80-210mm 1:4.5-5-5.6 lens
I have taken many shots, and it had right from the start upon receiving it, came up with the ERR 99.
It also, shoots a black / (not really considered blank) frame.
Sometimes however, it'll shoot a partially exposed frame...top portion exposes image, rest black.
(I'm thinking sort of like when you have the flash sync shutter speed too high?)
(I've been repeatedly trying to test it with many various CF cards and other lenses, I have besides the two mentioned above.)
Upon reading a lot online, about the ERR 99, seems the other symptoms reflect a shutter problem?
I'm not interested in spending a lot for the 10D repair, as I would just rather sell the camera and the two lens package, and disclosing the issues, letting the new buyer (if they so choose to do so), get it fixed.
If there anything I can try that MAY be able to make this more predictable, or things to re-try or try that I haven't yet?
Thanks for reading and I appreciate all comments / suggestions. advice and further testing procedures.
What shutter speeds do the partially black frames come up at? It sounds like it maybe the camera shutter has started to go. The partially black frame can happen if the shutter is dying and it's being used at a high shutter speed.
I'll take a look at the EXIF info on the black (partially black frames)...
(So far the ones I looked at, are at 1/60th sec. - There's one with the top section of the frame showing image captured, and another showing it exposed 2/3 of the frame, blanking out the very bottom 1/3).
I also was reading (or thought that I had), - read that the various settings knob selections might also 'test' the camera further?
In otherwords, choosing, for example:
AUTO, P, Tv, A, M, A-DEP, and the other preset settings.
I'll try to make a point of recording the various test setup, and come up with that info...
It sounds like a shutter problem. Unfortunately, it may be difficult to get it repaired. I've heard that Canon no longer has replacement shutters for the 10D.
You may want to try pulling both batteries and upgrading the firmware to the latest version (2.0.1).
