p.1 #1 · Redwood Garden

Just back from a few days in wine country and up the California coastline to Mendocino, through the lovely Navarro Redwood State Park. The weather wasn't great for photography, but there is always something to photograph. The dull day was a great day for photographing in the redwoods.

Speakaing of composition, I wondered if I should use that downed tree on the right as my level where we can't actually see the horizon...but then again, the trees wouldn't be perfectly straight.

For me, the upright prominent center tree should be your guide, which it seems to have been. It looks level to me.

i quite like this comp, very raw and i can feel that i'm here, and the level seems fine to me! i'm just curious, did you happen to use a polarizer for this?

Very nice, Rosemary. Who wouldn't have a good time in oxygen-enriched surroundings such as these?

I notice that the lower bark on all of the trees is gray. Was this area flooded at one time? If not, any idea of how this came to be?

Don, you've got great powers of observation. I can't honestly say I noticed that...but this is the Navarro River corridor so I'm imagining it is quite possible that this area has been flooded at one time or the other during the lifetime of these big guys.

And no, I didn't use a polarizer. I was looking for an area which was a bit open to the sky which was quite gray that day. I guess I was looking for a little portrait lighting.

Very nice setting Rosemary - its never easy to get good light to shoot with in that area and this one works quite well. This image makes me fell like I want to go back there again - soon.

Thanks for sharing.

Rosemary, this really resonates with me, since the forest biomes are my favorite places. Your image is outsanding in many ways, but I have to mention the most meaningful part is the fact that you didn't try to oversaturate or change the hues of the forest primeval. I have the feeling of being in a refuge of complete complexity and intrication within this labyrinth of organic beauty.

I feel like I'm THERE, and that is the key.

Magnificent.

You're right, Larry. I didn't do a darn thing in post except crop it and clean up one wayward stick.

Being there was totally intoxicating. It felt very alive.
