I have a D300s and it was saving files fine, whether I had it to save only jpg or raw + jpg. I changed a couple settings recently, and now I have an issue - my camera is saving copies of every picture.
Example (I have it set to raw + jpg)
DSC_2183.JPG
DSC_2183.NEF
DSC_2183_01.JPG
DSC_2183_01.NEF
The two jpg and nef files are exactly the same size. All I changed was to have the raw files lossless and umcompressed, that's it. I've read the entire section in the manual about "image recording options" and cannot figure this out.
Sounds like you're shooting in RAW + JPEG quality mode...lots of different used for this mode, not the least of which is skipping the raw conversion step.
On the top lcd you should see RAW then below that either Basic or Fine. Just press your Quality button and turn the thumb wheel until that window only says RAW (or Fine if your'e shooting JPEG only).
I don't think he is confused about raw + jpg mode. His example clearly shows that a duplicate *set* of files is being created with the suffix "_01".
I don't have a solution to offer other than that perhaps it an issue with your card(s). I don't know enough about the D300s but perhaps a backup/duplicate file setting and one card slot is empty or holding a defective card?
Thanks SAng - You are correct; I am saving raw + jpg on purpose. (@Shutterslam: I shot almost 1,000 photos at a wedding yesterday, and want to give the client the jpg files, most of which are always fine, but want the raw just in case there's an 'important' shot that I need to edit.)
I only have one card in, an SD card, and I do not have the camera set to use both card slots. Very strange!!! Thanks for any help. At least I'm not losing files!! They all seem to be there just fine.
Yes, I formatted the SD card the day before, and did not have any problems with the card before or after.
No, the duplicates did not show in the camera. They did show in NX as duplicates, but without the "_01" on the end - my computer probably did that. I use a USB cable to transfer from the camera.
**Finally, I think I figured it out, for now at least. The primary save to slot was set to CF and I had no CF card in my camera. However, this was never a problem in the past. I did do a camera reset before my shoot yesterday, but like I said, it was never a problem in the past.
I have seen this behavior (dupe nefs, and dupe jpgs) by the way on the D700...when I was shooting in R+J mode...couldn't make heads or tails of it at the time so I shut it off and haven't revisited the issue since.
