p.1 #1 · Giving Back

I know a lot of us use our talent to help others. For those that don't or have not had the opportunity I wanted to make a post that would spotlight some of the great things we do for the community to give back.

Please post some of the work or tell what you have done in the past. Hopefully this thread will be good encouragement and recognition.

Well, I'll kick things off. I'm happy to share something that another FMer is doing...

Currently, Sam Hassas is running a print sale on his blog to benefit an orphanage he shot for a while ago, which sounds like a tremendous cause...

A few months ago, I did a pretty big campaign that benefitted a friend's non-profit education project in the slums of Kenya... Here's the project: http://matharechildren.com

And here's a link to my final blog post. All in all, we raised almost $4300 in print sales to donate to the project... The breakdown is here: http://hofferphotography.com/blog/2009/09/01/and-the-grand-total-is/

No, his name is Tyler, and he's not quite in metro Denver proper.

Good luck with it!

I've donated my time this year to cover events for the Charley Foundation and for the Wounded Warrior Project. I've also worked with America World Adoption Agency this year, although I was compensated (at a reduced NFP rate).

I am working out the details right now to cover a mission trip next year in Africa for Visting Orphans, which is a wonderful organization run by an amazing former client of mine.

Dude, you HAVE to let me know where and when you're going. I may be doing the same thing in Nairobi if the scheduling works out.

Along with a bunch more.

Here is the story from the blog:

To bring everyone up to speed, I was invited to Tupelo Children's Mansion (an orphanage in Mississippi) for a photo shoot a couple weeks ago. (To catch yourself up, read my post and view the images from the day here: TCP).
Upon leaving there, I decided to help them with an endeavor to raise $100,000 in the next several weeks. If I could help with just .01% I'd be very glad.

Meet the Mansion Champions

Chris and Christina are twin orphans that live at the Tupelo Childrens mansion. Their story is incredible. They are enrolled in a 5K run in Florida with the sole purpose of raising awareness and funds for the place they call home. The cause is noble, and I want to do EVERYTHING I can to help. These shots are from a session we had with the champs during my stay at Tupelo. Their web page and story can be read here: Mansion Champions

BUY MY RANDOM PHOTOS

For the next 7 days ALL proceeds from prints sold through my proofing site will go DIRECTLY to the Mansion. I'm not holding back a dime. If you are a client and you choose to buy prints from your wedding, engagement portrait, senior, music, commercial or ANY other shoot, you may do so. ALL proceeds will go straight to Tupelo Children's Mansion. I realize that many of you are not clients and have not had a session from me so for you I've uploaded some of my random photo art that I've taken through the years. It's a real mixed bag. I'll be first to say that I'm a people shooter first. These random shots were chosen so that folks of all interest could participate. I've also made the prints from the session at Tupelo available for purchase. I know of no better cause.

Buy these photos:
where to buy.

For those who want to just give directly to the mansion without buying anything you can do so here: Mansion Champions

SPREAD THE WORD

If you're on Facebook, POST IT.
If you have a blog, LINK IT.
If you have a megaphone, YELL IT.
If you have a phone, CALL SOMEONE.

Lets help the orphans folks. You'll be a better human for it. For the next 7 days this post will remain at the front page of my blog. I'd love for you to help!

Blessings.

~Sam

Well... when we shot an e-session together about a month ago Tony Schreiber told me about this incredibly amazing charity he's done some work for:

http://www.nowilaymedowntosleep.org/

I can't really even describe what they do without choking up.

When he told me about it I was kinda freaked out. So much so that I didn't even immediately understand that it was a charity... so I even asked him a ridiculously boneheaded question along the lines of "how do you do it? Is it for the money?"

Hey we all get to be an a$$ at times, I get to do it more often than others.

Anyway... I was already a fan of his work and he'd made a good impression on me when I'd run into him a couple of times before in my life (in totally unrelated circumstances) but when the next day I looked the website up I have to say that I was pretty freggin' humbled.

A big thanks to Tony and the others who have donated their time and work for this incredible charity... I wish our family had been the beneficiary of it some 40 years ago.

Now I lay me down to sleep- Angie did a few of these in the past really tough and rewarding work. I dont know how she did

The Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep Foundation (NILMDTS) administers a network of almost 7,000 volunteer photographers in the United States and twenty-five countries. At a family's request, a NILMDTS Affiliated Photographer will come to your hospital or hospice location and conduct a sensitive and private portrait session. The portraits are then professionally retouched and presented to the families on an archival DVD or CD that can be used to print

Good for Angie. I do this too for my local hospital after we suffered a loss ourselves two years ago. I do it to help parents that go through the same and hopefully because it happened to me too I can be of extra comfort to them. I have just been asked to join the organization and am looking into being affiliated with them.

I also work with March of Dimes and volunteer to shoot for their events each year. But I want to constantly be on the lookout for other opportunities to give back. Cheers all, Martin

I too have been providing my services to Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep. Some of the most difficult things to ever do. But totally worth it. I've been on board for about a year and a half now and can't see myself NOT doing it. It's become a part of me.

I have donated a family session to my workplace for raising funds for local charity here. Will be shooting for it this weekend.

I am also looking to participate in the Hope Portrait thing on 12/12, but don't have specifics in mind yet.

We had a friend who's son passed away a couple months ago at only 5 days old and born premature at 27 weeks. In this little boys honor we did a photography benefit to raise money for a local hospital's NICU in his honor. We raised $1200.00!

http://5th-streetphoto.blogspot.com/2009/08/benefit-for-rocco-sign-up-for-session.html

Right now we are supporting our troops and their families by working with Portraits of Love. We give free photo sessions to Families and loved ones and upload it to a website in conjunction with them. The family gets to pick out a 5x7 to send overseas to that loved one. Great organization and proud to help out :o)
