Hi Guys, I might be in need for a 300 f4 nikon and wondered what the dof would be with a 1.4 convrter, meaning can i really isolate the background with 5.6 on this combo?
I was under the impression that if you add a teleconverter to a lens the DOF remains the same. So a 300 F4 at 30ft would have the same DOF as a 420 f5.6 at 30ft. I could be incorrect though.
just checked the dof calculator (thanks Avi), and it shows 23,4 feet for 200 feet (across a fieldhockey field for instance) with 420/5.6 settings. 300 feet distance goes to 52 feet dof..... Not really usefull for serious isolation. So prolem solved, moving from 300/f4 to another solution I guess... 420 from f5.6 to f4 makes a big difference according to the calculator!

I really doubt you will be shooting sports at the full 300ft. I shoot sports from sideline about 100-150 ft ahead of the action depending on player size. Field hockey and soccer happen fast so you have to pick best spots for action. I like to use my position to get in th 5-8ft DOF if I can.
EDIT: noticed you are using FF calcs for D3/D700 series. this is why I can't get rid of my crop body.
yes you're right Kraut, D700. I might want to try the 80-200 afs halfway on the field (meaning not standing behind one of the goals) (kids are playing on half a field). That way I'll be closer to the action, and will still have a good framefilled shot.
