I thought about that, but realized that once I remove the lens from the cap, what happens to the cap? It normally winds up in my pocket and dust happens. But most of the time, I immediately use that cap for the lens I just took off my camera.
Either way, you are more likely to get dust bunnies fiddling with the lens cap while the camera body is "Lensless" awaiting the next lens.
Here's an alternative that I came up with.
Secure a band of "Loop" velcro around your wrist or attach to your sleeve or camera vest. Place a smooth piece of plastic or paper in the camera bag so it doesn't attach. Now, extract the lens and tap the cap on your wrist, twist and now the cap is disengaged ready to receive the lens you just took off your camera.
My lens cap for the back element always goes from the new lens onto the one I take off the camera outside the bag, The cap never goes into a pocket. This way the back elements and the back cap stays dust free (to the extent possible )
Like all great ideas.... I gota whack myself in the head and say now why didn't I think of that. What a damn fine idea.... Gonna do a w/e project to rip that idea off... Thx....

NEW YORK – Americans spent about the same amount in October as in August and September, according to figures released Thursday by a key data service, and they may be settling into new low-spending habits.
On a curious note, retailers in every state have been reporting surging sales of hook and loop Velcro. Asked about the sudden uptick in demand, one Walmart employee responded by saying, "It was a quiet morning, like any other, when suddenly a rush of photographers came bursting through the doors screaming "where do you keep the LouHand Sticky Butts!!!!? Five minutes later, every piece of velcro in the store was gone, including the tabs we use to secure the price plates."

Just wait until Nikon starts adding velcro to their lens caps at the factory. Since that will be the official Nikon velcro, cost of lens caps will jump to $52.

I seem to recall Nikon had cases/bags with rear caps mounted semi-permanently waaaaaay back.. I googled for a description/picture, but could not find it. Does anyone else recall this?
Lens making companies have all just vowed to come out with VELCROED rear lens caps Each future lens purchased will carry 5 rear caps ... to provision yr other lenses of the same make !!

I should try it before I question, ... but don't you guys use hoods and put your lenses in front side down? If it's hood side up it's hard to grab (especially for wides) and you might untwist the hood instead of the rear cap on the way out.
Really they should make an additional "aperture" at the back of the lens that would automatically open when the lens is mounted and close when unmounted. This would provide dust protection which could be supplemented by the physical protection of the cap after the shoot or when it's convenient during.
Actually, I never swap lenses one-handed. I have a home-made sholder strap that supports the camera and I use two hands to swap the lens. Safe, easy & fast.
