p.1 #1 · Canon 5D II resolution ... | |
I've had a 5D II in my hands for about 2 weeks now. It's one impressive camera from many, many standpoints, but its resolution is surely at the top of the list. I can finally crop way down to the exact image I really want and still be able to print 8" X 12" at native resolution.
The other thing that strikes me is that this is my first Canon DSLR since my 1Ds and older 10D that has done away with the typical "digital artificiality" that plagues so many cameras. The 5D II doesn't at all show its digital roots and exhibits NO artifacts of any kind. It's as close to a film-like image as any DLSR I've use to date, including the Fuji S2 Pro, which I and others consider the "missing link" between film and digital. Color is spot on most of the time, and dynamic range is outstanding.
Anyway, here are some recent tests of the 5D II's capabilities. Most are heavily cropped from the original, some as much as 60-70%, some at 50%, but it's hard to tell ... if not impossible. All were shot at my favorite testing grounds: a nearby zoo, an environmental center and a historic New Jersey farm. The resolution of this camera ... though not the best in terms of lpm ... provides a level of detail that really surprised me.
